Elsa Dutton‘s 17-year-old daughter and oldest child of James and Margaret. because she is young and not very disciplined. Her parents, disagree about how she should be raised. They disagree about whether she should be strong and independent, or gentle and ladylike. As time goes on, she becomes more and more attracted to the nature she sees on the trip and calls herself a cowboy. Elsa Dutton faces yet another seemingly insurmountable hurdle after overcoming the impulse to commit suicide following the death of her first love Ennis (Eric Nelsen), and then surviving a hurricane only to leave her Comanche husband Sam (Martin Sensmeier) behind so she can be with the Duttons. Elsa’s prospects of life are minimal this time, as a bodily infection threatens to kill her.
In the events of episode 9, Elsa’s caravan was savagely ambushed by a band of Lakota warriors who mistaken them for horse thieves who had slaughtered a nearby Lakota community along the Oregon Trail. James Dutton (Tim McGraw), Shea Brennan (Sam Elliot), and Thomas (LaMonica Garrett) track down and kill the thieves, but it’s too late to prevent Elsa from being seriously injured by the Lakota. Fortunately, Elsa is back in her pants and has recovered sufficiently to mount her horse. The conclusion of 1883 is here, and Elsa’s fate will influence whether or not fans will want to watch season 2 of the show.
