Teonna (Aminah Nieves) is smacked with a wooden ruler by Sister Mary O’Connor (Jennifer Ehle) in the first episode of 1923 because she can’t recall the steps for manufacturing soap. As the rest of the students look on in stunned silence, the provoked girl pins her attacker to the ground and repeatedly punches her in the face. When Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) learns of the situation, he punishes them both for going against the tenets upon which the Catholic boarding school was established.
