In Taylor Sheridan‘s exciting prequel to Yellowstone, 1923, fans met a new generation of Duttons, led by Harrison Ford’s character Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren‘s character Cara Dutton. This part of the Yellowstone saga showed how the family fought early on to defend their Montana ranch from strong outside forces. It also showed Spencer Dutton (played by Brandon Sklenar) and his wife Alexandra (played by Julia Schlaepfer) as they went on a very dangerous journey across continents and through war-like chaos.

WILL THERE BE A 1923 SEASON 3?
Paramount+ has not yet confirmed that 1923 will have a third season. The mind behind the Yellowstone universe, Taylor Sheridan made it clear in 2022 that 1923 was going to end in two groups of eight episodes each. In his own words:
“I’m the one that made the call to the network… I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice.”
Still, 17 million people around the world watched the Season 2 finale, which is 41% more than Season 1. It’s possible that Paramount would want more with that much success.
Still, the story of 1923 seems to be mostly over. Most of the storylines for the characters are wrapped up in the last episode, which felt like an emotional ending. The year 1923 is over if Sheridan follows through with his original plan. There is, however, hope in the form of another upcoming prequel: “1944”. This movie is currently being made and may carry on the Dutton legacy by focusing on an older Spencer and his son, John Dutton Jr.

we know that Jacob Dutton and Sheriff McDowell are waiting at the station to greet Spencer and protect him from Donald Whitfield’s thugs. Gunfights break out in full force. Spencer just barely gets away and in a shocking turn of events, Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) gives up his life to save Jacob.
Back at the ranch, Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) stands her ground with a gun and helps Zane shoot Whitfield’s men. Spencer just gets there in time to tip the scales. It’s a tough fight, but the Duttons just barely win.
Spencer and Jacob break into Whitfield’s house to get revenge and make things right. Spencer shoots and kills Whitfield right away at the breakfast table. The threat is gone but it cost a lot. Alex and Jack Dutton have been buried on the ranch, and Spencer is now in charge of everything. Jacob and Cara retire and take care of Spencer’s new baby son. In a different story, Teonna Rainwater finally gets her freedom and heads west to start over. Elsa Dutton tells the story of Spencer’s death, showing that he dies of old age with Alex always in his heart.
IF SEASON 3 HAPPENS, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
Even though Season 2 ends on a cliffhanger, there are still things that could be explored if Sheridan decides to add to this world in Season 3 of 1923 or connect it to 1944.
Even though they are tired, both Jacob and Cara still have a lot to teach us. While Jacob is retiring, Cara may form a bond with Spencer’s son, which could add emotional depth and cross-generational themes to the next chapter.
The early years of John Jr., who was born into chaos, could be a big part of the story. The way Spencer, Cara, and Jacob raised him will shape the next generation of Dutton leaders. In a way, this sets the stage for 1944.
Teonna (Aminah Nieves) is no longer being persecuted. People have been deeply moved by her story of survival, faith, and cultural identity. Her trip west opens up more room for Native American stories in the world of Yellowstone, especially if her children or grandchildren show up in Yellowstone or 1923 spin-offs.
Season 3 could be about the Dust Bowl, the New Deal, and how these changes in society affect cattle ranchers in Montana. The show would be set during the Great Depression. That could lead to fights with banks, government officials, and even new enemies.

Whether 1923 Season 3 happens or not, there’s no doubt that the show took viewers on a powerful and emotional journey. It helped us learn more about the Dutton family and gave us new characters we will never forget, like Spencer and Alex, Cara and Jacob, and Teonna Rainwater. It had a sad ending but it stayed true to Sheridan’s vision of a world where people have to work hard to be strong and where justice often costs a lot.
If the story goes on in 1944, we hope it stays true to the spirit of 1923 while also going in a new direction. No matter where the Duttons go next, fans will be there as well.
