Shanice (Brittany Adebumola) is getting ready for work when the series begins. She’s a lawyer preparing to return to work after maternity leave, but she’ll be leaving behind a devoted husband who will stay at home to care for their young daughter. She kisses her family farewell, gets in her car, and drives to work when her radio breaks down when she is stopped at a stop sign. A green light appears, her door opens, and she is pulled out of her automobile as though vacuumed into the sky by a big vacuum cleaner. The next moment, she and thousands of others are tossed from a portal into a park in her hometown of Detroit. And just like Shanice, you’ll be wondering what the hell is going on within the first three minutes of the pilot episode, but you’ll be interested to see where this series will take you.
From here, viewers meet some of the other returning characters. Andre (TL Thompson) is a Harlem-born WWI surgeon. Claudette (Jaye Ladymore) is a Mississippi civil rights activist, and Isaiah (Derrick A. King) is a Chicago preacher from the 1990s. We also get to watch how things go with the government personnel who herded a small group of the 4400 into a Detroit hotel. Jharell (Joseph David-Jones) is a kind-hearted social worker trying to help the 4400 acclimate to 2021. His companion, Keisha (Ireon Roach), is a prison officer who knows how to earn trust.
