The drama continues in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 12, titled “Disconnected,” as the series shifts its focus to two key characters—Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Eddie (Ryan Guzman). While Buck (Oliver Stark) processes his complicated emotions about Eddie, the upcoming episode will explore how both Maddie and Eddie are adjusting to their new realities.
MADDIE FACES HER TRAUMA
Maddie is physically better after being kidnapped, but she is still having emotional problems. She decides to go back to work in the hopes of getting back to normal. But she may have made her choice too quickly. In an ABC sneak peek, Maddie tells Chimney (Kenneth Choi) that she has been having nightmares about work but still wants to go back. Chim is confused, which makes sense; she is questioning her reasoning.
Once she gets back to the call center, Maddie gets a call from a boy whose father has passed out from breathing in smoke. As she points the 118 to the scene, she starts to choke and can’t breathe or speak. This makes her think of the time her throat was cut, which was a traumatic event in her past. Bobby (Peter Krause) and the caller desperately try to get through to her, but she seems frozen in fear. It remains to be seen whether she can overcome this or if she has returned to work too soon.
EDDIE’S NEW LIFE IN TEXAS
Meanwhile, Eddie’s storyline takes him to El Paso, Texas, where he has been trying to establish a new life with his son, Christopher. Details about his journey have been scarce, but according to showrunner Tim Minear,, Eddie’s story in this episode is about “trying to reconnect with his kid and do the right thing.” However, it seems like he may be overcompensating in some way. The episode will explore the struggles he faces as he tries to adjust to his new environment while also being the father Christopher needs.
A cryptic hint from the episode’s description suggests that Christopher will find Eddie in an unfamiliar situation—raising questions about what exactly Eddie is dealing with and whether he’s truly happy with his decision to leave Los Angeles.
