Abbott Elementary Season 1 Episode 10 Recap
During recess, Janine made an embarrassing attempt to join students playing double dutch in the gym. Jacob goes for it and is unexpectedly skilled at double dutch, mocking Janine with a poem about how envious. Melissa says that she ordered food for the impending open house in the teacher’s lounge the next morning. Barbara and Jacob are overjoyed, but Gregory is concerned that he will have to spend too much time socializing with his parents. Melissa and Barbara assuage his fears by assuring him that almost no one shows there every year. Barbara says in a breakout that the open house is available to anyone in the area, including parents, but that attendance is always minimal because many have to work. Janine is getting set to meet with Nina’s mother, who is one of her students. Nina has been having trouble in class, and Janine recognizes that this is a critical time in her schooling. She needs her mother’s assistance, and she agreed to attend the open house. When Gregory inquires as to why Ava isn’t attempting to impress the superintendent, .
When Gregory discovers that’s how she obtained the job, he’s shocked to learn that she beat him to it due to blackmail. Janine waits for Nina’s mother to arrive at the open house for hours. She walks to Barbara’s classroom, nervous about the approaching encounter when she finds Barbara chatting with her stunning daughter Taylor. Janine is envious of Taylor’s seemingly perfect relationship with Barbara, who is visiting from New York. Janine, who seems uncomfortable and out of place, informs Taylor that she is Barbara’s work daughter and advises her not to be envious, which Taylor plainly isn’t. Janine tries to interject herself into Barbara and Taylor’s dinner preparations after delivering a strange story about seeing a rat. She unintentionally reignites an old feud between them. Taylor works as a sales representative for a high-end alcoholic beverage company, but Barbara believes she should be doing more with her skills, such as teaching or assisting others. After informing Barbara that devoting her life to children has only resulted in her being unable to afford a mortgage, Taylor becomes enraged and walks out.
Mr. Johnson, Melissa, and Jacob gather in the library for a pleasant game of poker, with Melissa and Mr. Johnson promising to be gentle with Jacob, who has never played before. When Superintendent Collins arrives, Ava is playing obscene music on the school’s PA system. Ava and the superintendent run across Gregory, who is still slumped and disheveled, He walks away after jokingly complimenting Superintendent Collins on his excellent hiring decision with Ava. Meanwhile, Janine is still waiting for Nina’s mother to arrive in her classroom. Janine leaves her a message, but things don’t seem to be going well. Janine is disappointed to witness Barbara and Taylor hugging in Barbara’s classroom after deciding to patch things between them. Barbara assures Taylor that she loves her and that she will always be proud of her, and Janine exits the room awkwardly. Janine, who is depressed, texts her own mother multiple times to inquire about her well-being but receives no response.
Nina’s mother appears as she walks out of her classroom. Janine is enraged by the events of the day and slams Nina’s mother for being late and failing to support her daughter. Nina’s mother reveals that she was at the emergency room saving a man’s life, and Janine feels guilty. She apologizes and explains that it’s a personal matter, and the two sit down to work out a solution for Nina. Nina’s mom thanks Janine and hugs her, telling her how blessed Nina is to have her. Janine adds that she wants to work with Nina’s mom to help her with her reading and arithmetic challenges, and Nina’s mom thanks her and hugs her. Janine walks into the teacher’s lounge and tells Gregory how delighted she is. She inquires as to what is wrong, and he responds that he is still digesting some information. Gregory has a date with Taylor, Barbara’s daughter, at the restaurant Janine suggested, so Janine finally invites him out for a drink to celebrate. Jacob assures Melissa and Mr. Johnson in the library that he can manage whatever the poker game’s outcome is. Jacob has duped them into believing he has never played poker before and has won a large sum of money. Melissa assures him that she will avenge him, but that she is impressed.
