ABBOTT ELEMENTARY (MUSIC CLASS) RECAP: SEASON 4 EPISODE 19 EXPLAINED

ABBOTT ELEMENTARY SEASON 4 EPISODE 19 RECAP: In the most recent episode of Abbott Elementary, the school deals with the fallout from Ava’s firing, which is both sad and funny.  Gregory takes over as acting director, and Barbara takes on the difficult job of teaching music. This episode shows how each character deals with change.  Around the same time, Janine can’t accept Ava’s fate and sets out to bring her back, but Ava is already planning her next big move.

 GREGORY STRUGGLES AS INTERIM PRINCIPAL

Abbott Elementary -s4e9,

Gregory (Tyler James Williams) takes over as interim principal at the beginning of the episode, but it’s clear right away that his attitude is very different from Ava’s.  He gives a boring morning announcement that doesn’t have her unique style, which makes the school feel different right away.  Gregory is very careful and organized, but he quickly learns that Ava’s unique way of filing things is its own puzzle.
Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) asks Gregory to make an easy change to a student’s records to show that they are allergic to garlic.  But when he tries to find the file, he runs into Ava’s strange way of sorting things.  Instead of using the usual filing system, Ava has set everything up based on references from the reality show Survivor. She has used the names of contestants and the season numbers as titles.  Gregory is completely confused and sees that figuring out Ava’s notes will require more than just logic. He needs to understand how Ava Coleman thinks.
Gregory turns to Melissa for help and right away Melissa understands what he means.  She quickly makes the link to Boston Rob, a famous contestant, because she is a huge Survivor fan.  So they can figure out what’s going on, they start watching a lot of episodes at once. But soon they realize that the only way to really solve the puzzle is to talk to Ava herself.

 Barbara Starts Taking Music Class

At the same time, Barbara has her own problems to deal with when she takes over leading music class.  She quickly figures out that her bigger students aren’t as interested in learning as her younger ones because she is known for her strict rules and traditional methods.  The students aren’t interested in her lesson on the “fun-damentals” of music. Instead, they are much more interested in a video that went popular of one of them remixing Barbara’s voice into a catchy track.
Barbara isn’t impressed and calls the movie “a collection of noises” instead of music.  Jacob (Chris Perfetti), who has been watching the class, tells her she needs to find a way to connect with the kids on their level.  Even though she didn’t want to at first, Barbara tries to bring her lessons up to date by using famous songs.  The kids still don’t want to do extra work for an after-school club, though.
In the end, Barbara comes up with a middle ground by helping the kids improve their video while still using real music principles.  This is a small but important win that shows even the most experienced teachers need to change with the times.

JANINE REFUSES TO GIVE UP ON AVA

Janine (Quinta Brunson) who is always positive, can’t accept that Ava’s firing is the end of her journey at Abbott.  Janine can’t stand the thought of Abbott without Ava when she goes back to the school to get the rest of her things and has to wear a visitor’s pass.  Janine won’t let go of the situation, even though Ava says she’s fine and doing well with her side jobs.
Janine wants to help, so she looks into appealing Ava’s firing.  When she calls Manny at the district office, he tells her that she can file an appeal, but she needs Ava to agree.  But when Janine tries to talk to Ava about the appeal—she is turned down.  Ava laughs at the idea of “begging for her job back” because she has already moved on to the next job.
Anyway, Ava is busy with her most recent job, which she calls a “TEB-Talk”—a encouraging speaking event.  Because Janine doesn’t trust the event, she asks Melissa and Gregory to step in before Ava does something she’ll regret.  But when they get to the event, they are shocked to see that Ava has a huge crowd of people who are listening to every word she says.
Ava, who is now known as a life guide and philanthropist, tells stories about her time at Abbott that keep the crowd interested.  She tells made-up stories about her coworkers to make herself sound like the “compass” that leads others to success.  Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) even shows up and throws T-shirts into the crowd while Ava enjoys the attention.

 THE REVEAL: AVA’S SYSTEM

Janine, Melissa, and Gregory quickly return to their work after being briefly mesmerized by Ava’s new look.  They beg Ava to think again about going back to Abbott, but she is not moved.  On the other hand, Gregory finally asks Ava how her filing system works before they leave.
Everyone was shocked to find that Ava’s disorganized system actually makes sense.  She says that the names of the Survivor contestants and the season numbers match up with the kids’ bus routes, which are often used to let parents know when there are delays.  Gregory is impressed by her unusual but effective way of doing things, and he now values her guidance more.  He is so impressed by Ava’s creativity that he chooses to use a more personalized system to reorganize his own files.
At the end of the show, it’s clear that Ava’s time at Abbott isn’t over.  Even though she’s not director right now, she has had a huge effect on the school and the people who work there.  We know one thing about Ava Coleman: she always wins.
Even though Ava’s leaving Abbott Elementary caused a lot of trouble, this episode shows that she’s still there.  Things are always changing at school. Gregory is getting used to his new job, Barbara is changing the way she teaches, and Janine is fighting for justice.  Still, there is one question: Will Ava go back to Abbott?  Time will tell.
