Janine’s flamboyant mother, Vanetta, is brilliantly portrayed by Empire’s Taraji P. Henson, and she is so intimidating that even the cocky Principal Ava (Janelle James) is afraid of her. Vanetta is visiting her daughter for the first time at Abbott, which would be surprising if she didn’t have a hidden agenda. It’s no surprise that Janine gravitates toward Barbara, or “work mom” as she calls her, despite the fact that her assistance may be too much. After Janine’s professional dilemma in Episode 2.20, Barbara helps her out in the end. Janine has made it clear that her mother was a neglectful and absentee figure in her life. Furthermore, we are aware that Janine’s feelings for her mother are complex and multifaceted. Given this information, we should anticipate another emotional episode from Janine. Gregory (Tyler James Williams) provides this week’s comic relief.
