ABBOTT ELEMENTARY SEASON 4 EPISODE 3 RECAP
The third episode of Season 4 of ABBOTT ELEMENTARY, is both heartwarming and funny. It’s about a cute class guinea pig named Sweet Cheeks and Ava’s sneaky plan to keep computers that were given to her illegally. Janine and Gregory’s “will they, won’t they” relationship continues to simmer, but this episode has some new and exciting twists and turns.
At the beginning of the episode, Janine gets $50 from the school district to improve Abbott’s after-school programs. However, Janine doesn’t buy anything normal with the money. Instead, she buys a few class pets. Every teacher gets to take care of a pet. Barbara gets a beautiful beta fish, Gregory gets a rock pet named D’Wayne, and Janine tells Melissa she should take care of a guinea pig named Sweet Cheeks. Melissa, played by Lisa Ann Walter, at first says no, saying she doesn’t like pets and doesn’t want to have to explain death to her students if something happens. She reluctantly agrees, though, when Janine makes her.
Melissa starts to change how she feels about the guinea pig as soon as Sweet Cheeks walks into the classroom. Janine has a hard time with Sweet Cheeks’ biting, but Melissa ends up getting close to the guinea pig, even though she acts like she doesn’t. Behind the scenes, Melissa buys Sweet Cheeks fancy treats and even builds her a tiny house out of Popsicle sticks, even though she says she doesn’t like the guinea pig. By the end of the school day, Melissa’s secret love for the rodent is clear, even though she keeps complaining to Janine about having to take care of it.
Melissa’s thought process changes when she knows that the students will have to take care of Sweet Cheeks over the weekend. Melissa tells Janine that Sweet Cheeks has died because she can’t stand the thought of leaving the guinea pig with a careless second-grader. Janine thinks something is wrong and offers Melissa grief counseling. Melissa laughably turns it down, saying she would rather eat ribs and watch reality TV instead.
Jacob, who is played by Chris Perfetti, accidentally blows Melissa’s cover when he says that she’s been using the “carpet cleaning” reason because she has a date that weekend. Janine figures out right away that Melissa’s “date” is actually Sweet Cheeks. As Melissa drives off with her guinea pig for the weekend, it’s clear that she cares a lot more about Sweet Cheeks than she did at first.
At the same time, Janelle James’s character Ava is involved in a side story involving new computers that were given to her by a lawyer working for a company that is building a golf course nearby. The district won’t fix computers that weren’t given to them by them—so Ava tries to trick them into thinking the school has had the computers for years when it hasn’t. As soon as O’Shon (Matthew Law), the IT guy, comes to check out the computers, Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Jacob fall in love with the hot tech guy.
When O’Shon finds out that Ava is using powerful special effects software to make deepfakes of Janine, he quickly realizes that the computers are way too expensive for the school. While O’Shon is suspicious, he decides not to report the bribe when he sees how happy the kids are with their new tech. Instead, he makes a deal with Ava that she will send all tech support tickets straight to him. This makes their relationship stronger. As soon as O’Sean shows off his good looks, a spark of romance appears between him and Ava, which could lead to more things in the future.
Melissa brings Sweet Cheeks back to her classroom at the end because she has learned that being open with her students (and their pets) is part of caring for them. At the end of the episode, there is a mix of humor and sweetness as the teachers try to balance their professional and personal relationships while still taking care of the kids they work with.
