All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 Episode 4 Recap: Uninvited Guests

The latest episode of All Creatures Great and Small opens with a sense of suspense as Tristan Farnon captivates James and Rachel Shenton’s Character Helen with a wartime tale. In a tense moment, he felt the cold press of a gun against his back, but it turned out to be a camel nudging him for breakfast. This funny joke sets the tone for an episode full of funny moments, touching moments, and some surprises.
We see the Skeldale House family deal with their normal mix of veterinary duties, personal problems, and the constant threat of war as the story goes on. This episode keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with things like escaped snakes and strange cow illnesses, all while strengthening the bonds between the show’s beloved characters.
All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 Episode 4 Recap
At the start of the episode, James and Helen are enjoying a rare moment of peace while strolling through Darrowby with their baby. Audrey Hall tells them that farmer Sid Crabtree has called about his cow, Rose, who won’t eat. This breaks their peace. Siegfried (Samuel West) is picking up Richard Carmody from the train station, so James goes to the Crabtree farm to be on call.
We met the Crabtrees for the first time in Season 4. They were a new farming couple whose herd almost died because of brucellosis. Things are going to get better for them this time. Sid got a new dog named Shep. Shep likes to sneak up on people and bark loudly. Sid is worried about Rose, even though Shep is acting up. James suggests linseed oil, but no one knows what’s wrong with the cow.
Tristan is getting used to living at Skeldale House, which feels a bit more crowded now. He’s not happy to hear that he has to share a bedroom with Richard Carmody, who just got back from London where he took his veterinary exams. Tristan loves going to the pub a lot, but Richard is very interested in bacteria and microscopes. Tristan says that Richard is like a “mini Siegfried.” They fight because they have different interests. Tristan goes to the pub by himself and comes back drunk, only to be locked in a closet for the night.

The Escape of the Snake

A scary call from Mrs. Pumphrey to Skeldale House changes the tone of the episode. Her house has been turned into a hospital, and a snake that one of the patients brought in has gotten out. Audrey asks Richard and Tristan to help her catch the snake because she thinks that working together will help their relationship, which is having a hard time right now.
Things are tense at Mrs. Pumphrey’s house. Mrs. Pumphrey is upset that a painting has gone missing, and Matron Herbert is too busy to do all of her work. Tristan thinks the snake is just a dream, but Richard is more concerned. While looking around the house, Richard meets Harry Tucker, a wounded soldier, and starts talking to him about his time in the war.
Just as Richard asks Harry about his injury, Tricki Woo runs off to take his mind off of things. Tristan and Richard chase the dog into a small room, where they get trapped along with the python that got out. Tristan scolds Richard for bothering him with questions about Harry’s wound because he is afraid of the snake. Richard says sorry and talks about his own problems. He also talks about how much it means to him to finally feel at home at Skeldale House.
They are eventually saved by Mrs. Pumphrey, and Richard wants to take the snake to Skeldale House, which makes Tristan very unhappy. Even though the episode ends with the snake being given to a zoo, Richard still says nice things about Tristan: “You’ve grown on me.” Such as bacteria.

The Ups and Downs of James

Back at the Crabtree farm, James doesn’t understand what’s wrong with Rose. No matter how hard he tries, the cow doesn’t get better. When the mailman, Mr. Oakley, gives him advice he wasn’t asked for, he makes him even more angry: a “right good gallop” for the cow. James is skeptical, but he has no other choice, so he lets Mr. Oakley carry out his plan.
To everyone’s surprise, the gallop works, and Rose gets better miraculously. Helen suggests that they celebrate at the pub, but Shep’s sudden, loud bark cuts them off. James screams at the dog, which runs away. Later, James feels bad about what he did and brings Shep a bone. He is amused to see the dog attack Mr. Oakley instead.
In a rare moment of openness, James tells Helen about his own bout with brucellosis and how it caused him to be kicked out of the RAF. He makes a passing reference to how bad it was when his crew was shot down, but then quickly changes the subject. This shows how much the war has hurt him.

All Creatures Great and Small Season 5, Episode 4: Ending

There are a lot of touching moments at the end of the episode. The painting that Mrs. Pumphrey lost is found, and she makes peace with Matron Herbert. The painting, which reminds her of her childhood home, represents how important family and roots are, which was a theme that ran through the whole episode.
With a new mattress, Tristan can sleep better at Skeldale House, but he’s still not sure about sharing his room with a snake. Both Audrey and Siegfried are scared, but Siegfried is most worried about the safety of Volonel, his pet rat. Because of his conversation with Harry, Richard thinks about joining the military, but Tristan tells him not to.
Tristan and Richard finally get along at the end of the episode, admitting that they had fun going on the snake-catching adventure. Animal lovers give the snake to a zoo, and Richard’s compliment to Tristan is the start of a friendship.Richard, inspired by his conversation with Harry, considers enlisting in the military, but Tristan advises against it.
As the episode ends, Tristan and Richard share a rare moment of camaraderie, admitting they enjoyed their snake-catching adventure. The snake is donated to a zoo, and Richard’s compliment to Tristan marks the beginning of a budding friendship.
