Better Things Season 5 Episode 1 Recap
In the Season 5 debut, we once again get to ride shotgun with Pamela Adlon’s Sam as she goes about her day. Sam agrees to pick her up for “the thing” (which turns out to be a genealogy test) over the phone with her mother, but Phil is convinced she has “nothing to learn from the dead.” Marion calls, and Sam requests that her brother explain the financial situation to her. He confirms that he won’t be able to explain NFTs to her in his remaining days. Sam and Marion learn some terrible family history during the genealogy test. Only one member of their family survived Hitler’s reign of terror: their cousin Clara. Clara and her husband Anatoly had two children, but when Anatoly’s mother discovered Clara was Jewish, she handed them over to the Nazis.
They were all put to death. (Yikes.) Then they discover that their grandfather wasn’t their grandfather at all! Marion believes Phil was aware of the situation and is irritated by his mother’s alleged secrecy. Phil, understandably, doesn’t seem to mind that her father isn’t her biological father. She also has no desire to maintain the piles of family artefacts that have accumulated as she cleans out her home, including a framed photo of her deceased brother. Sam is intrigued by some of her grandmother’s writing and is overjoyed when she discovers her grandfather’s old baseball cards.
Frankie tells Sam of a dinner she’d forgotten about, and they’re heading to celebrate a friend’s Harvard acceptance. The cocktails begin to flow, and after dinner, they finally manage to get the kid’s inebriated mother into the car and drive her home. Rich is seen drinking his face off back at the house. The electricity goes off for a few moments, but owing to Sam’s new power generator, it comes back on immediately. Sam, however, mistakenly knocks over the statue at the top of the steps while celebrating her role as a kickass provider for her family. It smashes to bits as it falls all the way to the ground below. Her eyes enlarge. She’s stunned and speechless. She walks out the front door after blowing on her fingers.
