Black-ish Season 8 Episode 2 Recap

Andre fantasizes about being a batter for the Los Angeles Dodgers. At work, he’s been promoted from urban to general marketing, and he’s excited for higher budgets, a broader reach, and a seat at the table. Griffen Cameron Hopkins (Reid Scott) is a prodigy in the field of general marketing; at the age of twenty-one, he had already made his first national commercial. Andre, envious and irritated, consider the man’s white privilege and how it’s deemed odd when he acts erratically at work. Andre is ecstatic when his boss Leslie tells him they’ll be making a Super Bowl ad, but he downplays the fact that it’ll be his first.

Diane has a new necklace from a cute lad at school named Nate, but it’s clearly from a gumball machine, so she discards it. Ruby approves and urges her not to lower her standards, but Rainbow and Dre believe that it’s all in the mind. Ruby acknowledges that she thinks Nate is attractive, but she insists on finding “someone unattractive who is willing to spend that coin” instead. She agrees to go on one date with Nate after being persuaded by her mother, and Bow assures her that she will not be disappointed and that he may even surprise her.

Andre pitches a parody ad at the Super Bowl commercial pitch meeting, but his teammates aren’t impressed. When the prodigy comes up with a vague notion that his employees go crazy over, Andre fails to come up with a slogan to go along with it. Andre draws up a fresh commercial idea, using his frustration as inspiration, and offers it to his coworkers, but they aren’t interested. He sets forth suggestion after idea, but none of them seem to be working. Diane returns after her date with Nate, the cute but poor lad, that night. There were some awkward times, and when the boy’s car wouldn’t start, they were forced to take the bus home. Rainbow tells Ruby that the boy is officially a scrub, but Ruby insists that it’s all about the chemistry. Rainbow persuades Diane to go on another date with Nate, convinced that he could be the love of her life or a really nice friend.

Andre goes down to Urban Marketing at work to talk about his troubles with Charlie and Josh, who tell him he’s just stuck in a creative rut. Charlie reminds him that he must conquer his fear of failure in order to reach his full potential. Diane arrives at the house with a new gift from Nate, a phoney luxury purse. Ruby and Rainbow have finally come to an agreement, and they tell her that it’s time to fire him. “A man who buys you a bogus designer bag is the type of man who buys two middle seats on a flight to Europe,” Rainbow tells her.

In the meantime, Charlie drives Andre and Josh to the batting cage, where Andre confronts his phobia. He brings his Superbowl concept to the next business meeting, but they’ve already moved on to a butter commercial. Andre is enraged when Griffin comes up with a brilliant proposal on the spur of the moment. Griffin, his employer, and his coworkers are among the people he yells at. Andre and Bow talk about his difficult first few days in general marketing that night at home. He’s concerned that he’s reached the limit of his urban marketing abilities, but Rainbow assures him that he’s far from it, so Andre agrees to give the notion another chance.

Diane is back from her break-up with Nate, but she isn’t over him. Instead, she’s made the decision that she doesn’t want to be in a relationship where she’s judged solely on the basis of her possessions, and she’ll give him another chance. Andre talks to Griffin at work, who compliments him on his job and tells him that he’s always been inspired by urban marketing.  They come up with a terrific catchphrase together, and Andre uses it to pitch a fantastic Hyundai Superbowl commercial at the following meeting. Andre is finally out of his funk, and he imagines himself smashing a home run for the Dodgers!
