Cayley Mandadi’s Killer: Where is Mark Howerton Now?

“48 Hours,” the popular TV show, has been at the center of this story, telling the heartbreaking story of Cayley Mandadi’s strange death and the trials that followed. With an episode called “For the Love of Cayley Mandadi,” the show has brought the family of Mandadi’s unexpected death to the attention of people all over the country. This story looks at what happened with Mark Howerton, who is the main suspect, and how hard people worked to find the truth.

Who is Mark Howerton?

Mark P. Howerton was named Athlete of the Week by the local NBC station in Tyler, Texas when he was in high school. People called him a “hitting machine,” and he played baseball for his school. Howerton had shown up to events at Trinity University for Greek life. There have been claims of “Roid Rage” and violent behavior. According to online records, Howerton was arrested in Tyler, Texas, in February 2015 for having marijuana and another controlled drug on his person.

In the fall of 2017, Mark Howerton and junior cheerleader Cayley Mandadi met and started dating. Their relationship would later become the center of a tragic court case. They met at a music event in San Antonio on October 29, 2017, which was a very lively place. Both people were attracted to the festival’s mood and shared interests, so they ended up in the middle of the fun at the Mala Luna music festival.

Mark Howerton and Cayley Mandadi started to feel connected as they moved around the fairgrounds, taking in the music and the lively crowd. The tragedy began to take shape after the festival when things went badly for the pair. Reports say that Howerton’s meeting with Mandadi’s ex-boyfriend at the festival led to a fight between Howerton and Mandadi, which set off a chain of events.

What happened to Cayley Mandadi?

Cayley Mandadi’s parents are Talik Mandadi and Alison Steele. Cayley was the only child they had. Cayley Mandadi’s tragic death happened after a music festival on October 29, 2017. What was meant to be a fun night turned out to be a death. What Howerton said was that the pair agreed to have rough makeup sex on the way to Houston. Mandadi’s sudden illness and inability to respond, on the other hand, painted a troubling picture.

Howerton rushed her to the closest hospital. Doctors saw that she had been badly hurt, including bruises on her neck and legs. The medical test found a case of physical and violent sexual assault, which was different from what Howerton said about rough sex. A shocking cause of death was found during the autopsy: blunt force damage to the head and face. Howerton, who had been her boyfriend for only four weeks, became the main suspect. Medical workers said she was brain-dead on October 31 and said she died because she had been hit in the head and face. Howerton was charged with murder and sexual attack in the first degree.

As the trial went on, disturbing facts about the couple’s relationship came to light. Some of Mandadi’s friends said they saw bruises on her legs and told stories about times when Howerton was violent, like when he hit Mandadi over the head with a car window. Mandadi’s fear of her boyfriend and the fact that their relationship was tense painted a dark picture that made things more dramatic in court.

At the trial, different stories were being told. The prosecution said Howerton was violent, while the defense suggested other possibilities, such as Mandadi possibly overdosing on MDMA.  Even though there was more and more proof against Howerton, his first trial in 2019 ended in a mistrial, which put the whole country on edge.

But that wasn’t the end of the legal drama. The complicated 3D models and reenactment video that Lawrence Baitland and Alison Steele commissioned made the trial more complicated and gave a different view of what happened in Howerton’s car.  In 2023, Howerton was tried again and found guilty of aggravated assault causing major bodily injury instead of murder. The jury’s decision was very important, and Howerton got the maximum sentence of 20 years in jail. He serves his jail time.
