Casey returns home for both business and personal reasons in this week’s episode, “Danger Is All Around.” At work, he’s in charge of a top-secret task force and wants to appoint a local representative, someone he can trust to handle matters in Chicago in his absence. In Oregon, Casey starts working with the Department of Homeland Security since there have been reports of possible domestic terror plans throughout the country. In preparation for the possibility that these assaults would occur, he becomes involved with the FBI and the DHS and serves as a first responder. This is why he travels to Chicago: to brief emergency personnel in the hopes that they may be able to head off or halt an attack.
His individual motivations for doing so are more nuanced. Casey and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) eventually got physical before Casey had to leave for Portland to take care of Griffin and Ben Darden, the sons of Firehouse 51 legend Andy Darden, who died in the pilot episode. Casey and Sylvie tried the long-distance thing, but when he came back for the Stellaride wedding, they both realized it wasn’t working and decided to part ways.
