Halstead advised Upton not to worry about Voight and Halstead’s noticeable absence from Intelligence’s initial case briefing. In a hearing on an appeal, Ruzek testified that he had unlawfully searched the defendant’s home and planted the gun that had put him in jail. Even though the judge found in Ruzek’s favor, the label of “bad cop” still hurt. Burgess’ assurance that he didn’t need to fear if the pistol was visible before the decision didn’t help. She didn’t really mean anything by it, but he took it to mean that she didn’t trust him. When Wilkin, the defendant, escaped from his prison vehicle and kidnapped a guard, things got out of hand. Security footage, however, showed that the guard, a lady by the name of Tiana, was working with Wilkin after becoming romantically involved with him. After Tiana was captured, the team pursued Wilkin, who had shot a 10-year-old girl while stealing a getaway automobile. By handing the young woman the miniature horse figure Makayla had given him, Ruzek attempted to soothe her. Torres helped Intelligence identify a prospective collaborator. When the man answered the door after Burgess and Ruzek knocked, they saw a revolver in a gym bag.
Ruzek thought it would be too risky to go in even if Burgess pressed for them to do so since he wasn’t sure. However, Burgess disregarded his doubts and informed the crew of what she had observed before slamming the door. She was correct in her assessment of the rifle, but sadly Wilkin had already fled. Burgess followed Wilkin to a bus lavatory after he ran away from the bus terminal. She didn’t think twice to shoot back when he started firing, and she immediately killed him. Upton spoke to Halstead about his earlier departure afterward. Will informed her that they were in Chicago Medical, and Halstead disclosed that they had kept the sergeant’s injury a secret by having his brother repair Voight’s stitches. Given that what they were doing was technically unlawful, he wanted to keep her out of it. She spent the remainder of the evening alone in their apartment while he remained with Voight in a pub. Are they fine? Ruzek completed Makayla’s bird house in the interim, but Burgess had some ideas for his patio. A family and some lights were required. Burgess did make the decision to live with him. At the end of the hour, Burgess was in Ruzek’s arms as he sipped his beer, and the two appeared to be very at ease.
