Where was the Horror Movie ‘Consumed’ Filmed?

CONSUMED is a horror movie that is to be released in 2024, directed by Mitchell Altieri and written by David Calbert, The story revolves around a married couple named Beth, portrayed by Courtney Halverson, and Jay portrayed by Mark Famiglietti who go to a camp trip they soon regret. Beth, a breast cancer survivor, and Jay are already facing the stress in their relationship when the story begins and they prepare for their hiking trip. Jay tries to help Beth but becomes too intrusive, clashes with Beth’s emotional struggles.

As they start their trek in the wilderness, start experiencing series of supernatural and horrific incidents such as; footprints of animals, ominous feeling. The pair are unexpectedly hunted by a man obsessed with catching the Wendigo, a mythical creature that is said to eat its victims from the inside out. Their confrontation rises when a crazed hunter by the name Quinn (Devon Sawa) targets the two. Quinn is an enigmatic character struggling with his past and withholds important information from the couple, which increases the tension. The physical and psychological aspects of the movie appear when Beth experiences nightmare-like visions making it difficult to determine between real life and horror.

When the situation gets really bad, the film leans heavily into the relationship between Beth and Quinn, effectively sidelining Jay. This survival horror aspect becomes quite overt when a character like Beth fights not only external foes but also herself. David Calbert, who claimed The Hamiltons inspired his art, delivered a script that Altieri considered ideal for his directorial approach.

WHERE WAS ‘CONSUMED’ (2024) SHOT?

CONSUMED started shooting in the year 2021 in upstate New Jersey as the somber and gritty ambiance of the location lent itself well to the story of the movie. The filming location had a lot of forests and lots of rugged proposals for camping that enhanced the mood of the film and depicted the ordinary camping adventure as a fight for survival against a cruel creature. The shooting happened in seven weeks and such weather conditions made it difficult for the cast and crew to shoot but the complications gave the scenes in the film such an intense look.

Unfortunately, the filming of CONSUMED was not without its incidences. According to Director Mitchell Altieri, while the process took longer than expected, it was ultimately worth it. “I’m used to it. In movie years, three years is not too bad,” he said, explaining that he remained busy with other projects while waiting for CONSUMED to be completed.

The strikes of the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild hindered the production of the film from early July 2023 to November of the year. Although the shooting was completed in late February, additional footage was hard to obtain due to the pandemic restrictions, and editing was heavily delayed. But the actual post-production team was left to work as long as they wanted and as much detail as they could manage towards creating a perfect film. As stated by Altieri, the producers helped him to focus on the quality of work instead of adhering to a tight schedule, which is quite untypical for the film industry. By using this approach, Altieri and his team have made a film that is close to the best possible realisation of the screenplay.
