Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Welcome to Chatham
This week on Cruel Summer, we follow Megan, a young aspiring developer and Silicon Valley billionaire. The events of the season occur on July 16, 1999, December 15, 1999, and July 16, 2000, all at the same time. The strange disappearance and the intricate relationships between the characters drive this episode.
Megan is a driven student who plans to attend the University of Washington on a computer science scholarship. The diplomat’s daughter Isabella wants to complete her senior year back home. In the summer of 1999, Megan is mature and responsible enough to get a job in order to pay her bills. She holds a grudge against Isabella, the exchange student her mother hosted to save money on vacation. Megan doubts Isabella’s intentions because she doesn’t have many female pals. Isabella, on the other hand, wins over Megan’s circle of friends, including Luke, the son of a local real estate tycoon.
By the time it’s winter of 1999, Megan and Isabella are inseparable. Megan is attending her ideal university, and she is dating Luke. An awkward situation arises at Luke’s father’s Christmas party when a sex tape of Luke and Isabella is aired instead of a family film. Megan’s shameful experience affects everyone involved.
Megan has become a more sinister person since July of 2000. She’s wiping blood from the floor of a remote lodge, has a pierced eyebrow, and is involved in some sketchy business activities involving coding. Megan discovers a ripped Missing Person poster, and the town’s reaction to an unexpected visitor is discussed, suggesting that there may be a missing person case at play. The episode concludes with the discovery of Luke’s body and Isabella’s appearance by Megan’s side, implying that they need to synchronize their narratives.
There are a number of riddles and plot aspects that remain open throughout the show. Perhaps not at random, Isabella presented Megan with a mystery thriller book when she arrived. Megan becomes suspicious when she discovers a driver’s license that appears to use Isabella’s photo but bears a different name (Pat Highsmith) and birthday. Future events are hinted to by the presence of a kid with a video camera and the ongoing problems at Luke’s dad’s firm.
