In “TsékĘ̑’ Hasā́ní (Coal Mine Canyon),” the fifth episode of DARK WINDS Season 3, the tension between Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten), and Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) keeps growing. The fallout from the last episode is still weighing on the three of them, and they barely have time to get back to normal before more mysteries start to unfold.
Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 5 Recap
Joe is still shocked by Halsey’s murder and the scary home invasion led by FBI Agent Sylvia Washington (Jenna Elfman). Joe won’t back down, even though he’s been told to. Instead, he adds to the chaos by having Margaret, a medicine woman and Anna Atcitty’s grandmother, clean the station. He does this to get spiritual clarity. His hollow appearance and haunted eyes make his internal descent very clear. The monster spirit Yé’iitsoh, which Joe is afraid of, becomes more real, blurring the line between myth and reality. He talks to Margaret about some of the show’s deeper philosophical questions, like: Are monsters real, or do we make them up when we get lost?
This theme runs through the whole episode, and each character has to face their own truth. Joe’s once-unbreakable code has been broken into. He tells Emma, played by Deanna Allison, that he would do the same things again, even if they killed Vines. Emma is emotionally drained and is about to ask him to leave their house when Washington’s search warrant comes through. The damage is done, even though the search turns up nothing. Washington tries to get Emma to say something, but she doesn’t. Her loyalty barely hides her sadness.
Chee, meanwhile, is going downhill. He gets drunk and is easy to hurt because he is jealous of Bernadette’s relationship with Ivan Muños (Alex Meraz). Shorty Bowlegs (Derek Hinkey), who used to be an enemy, picks him up off the ground, gives him water, and reminds him that it’s his job to find George Bowlegs. Even Shorty is on a path to redemption, which shows a glimpse of an unexpected friendship.
Bernadette is on her own investigation in Juarez with Muños. They are following a sketchy refinery that has ties to Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood) and Budge de Baca (Raoul Max Trujillo). While posing as a couple on vacation, Bern confides in Muños about her traumatic past—a car accident and a 12-day coma that led to her adoption by the Leaphorns. Her loyalty to Joe and his moral code is unshakable. Yet, she draws a line, refusing to turn a blind eye to corruption. This is a pivotal moment in their growing connection—until a discovery in Muños’s wallet leaves her shaken.
When they get back to the reservation, Rosemary Vines tells Special Agent Washington some disturbing new facts: BJ used to be married to her sister, who died in a suspicious fire. Even more unsettling is Rosemary’s revelation that BJ was seen in a police car the night he disappeared, terrified. She claims she withheld the information until the “right moment.” Her cryptic and almost theatrical behavior adds to the episode’s mounting unease.
Joe and Chee go back to a diner, which is the last place Halsey was seen. A waitress confirms Halsey’s story by saying that he was there with someone she calls “Mexican Norman Bates,” who is clearly Budge. As the mysteries deepen, we are reminded that the main problem of this season has still not been solved: George Bowlegs is missing, and Ernesto Cata’s death still hangs over everyone.
Chee and Joe regroup in the morning. Chee, fighting off a hangover with pickle juice, shares information from D.C. contacts suggesting Budge may have been a CIA operative with a violent past. Joe’s renewed focus on George leads to a breakthrough. He is led to a desert near a coal mine, where George has been hiding alone with a horse. As Joe gets closer, the episode ends with scary winds howling in the distance, a sign that there will be another fight soon.
In DARK WINDS Season 3 Episode 5, the main question is asked again: Are we who we were or who we are trying to become? This episode peels back the layers of the characters and asks them and us to face the line between redemption and ruin. Spiritual forces, buried secrets, and personal reckonings are all at play.
