Dee Jay Daniels child actor

From Sitcom Star to a Shocking Crime

Dee Jay Daniels, born Dorjan Lyndell Daniels on October 17, 1988, in Montclair, California, kicked off life in Compton with a big family. Growing up, many of his relatives were no strangers to the streets, often landing in and out of jail. To steer him clear of trouble, his parents nudged him toward acting. It worked—big time! After scoring a gig in a Honey Nut Cheerios commercial, Daniels nabbed the role of Michael Hughley on The Hughleys, a hit sitcom that ran from 1998 to 2002 on ABC and UPN. This role established his reputation, leading to frequent appearances in shows such as The Wayans Bros., Grace Under Fire, Cold Case, and the 2005 Disney film Sky High.

But when The Hughleys wrapped, things shifted. Daniels, now a young adult, started hanging with a rough crowd, mirroring some of his family’s past. Then 2011 arrived, a year that completely upended his world. While out at Chitiva’s Bar and Grill in Stockton with pals Djuane Nunley and Marcus McCliman, a fight broke out. It ended with 26-year-old John Joseph “J.J.” Lewis stabbed and dead. Daniels and his crew got arrested, facing heavy charges like premeditated murder and street terrorism. Talk about a plot twist no one saw coming!

A Trial, a Testimony, and a Fresh Start

The courtroom became Daniels’ next stage, and it was intense. Facing a possible life sentence, he got a lifeline from an unexpected source—D.L. Hughley, his TV dad from The Hughleys. Hughley showed up to testify as a character witness, vouching for Daniels’ true nature. Daniels was deeply affected by that moment. He later shared in Hollywood Demons how honored he felt, saying it meant the world that Hughley still saw him as a son after all those years apart. On December 21, 2012, the verdict came: Daniels was acquitted. The court ruled he didn’t stab Lewis or plan the attack. However, Marcus McCliman was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and faced a potential 12-year prison sentence.

That close call was a wake-up moment for Daniels. He walked away from acting, leaving Hollywood in the rearview. But he didn’t just fade out—he pivoted to a whole new hustle. Curious about what he’s up to now? Keep reading!
