A summer night in 1992, a girl in a bikini, a locked swimming pool, and two young men with secrets to bury—ELSBETH Season 2 Episode 18, titled “I Know What You Did 33 Summers Ago”, dives deep into the shadows of the past to unravel a haunting crime that’s been sealed tight for decades. As the penultimate episodes of the season approach, this one serves as both a puzzle piece and a game-changer, revealing just how far power and guilt can travel when left unchecked. And Elsbeth Tascioni, played brilliantly by Carrie Preston, is determined to untangle it all, even as the stakes spiral beyond what she could have predicted.
THE PAST COMES BACK TO HAUNT

The episode opens with a flashback to 1992 at the Stockport Yacht Club. A young version of Judge Milton Crawford, portrayed chillingly by Ethan Dubin, is shown with teenage Andy Mertens and a carefree girl named Sherry (played by Ava DeMary). Crawford is arrogant, wealthy, and too confident in his family’s clout. What starts as a summer flirtation ends in tragedy when Sherry rebuffs Crawford’s advances, leading to a violent accident. Sherry hits her head on the edge of the pool during a struggle, dying instantly. Crawford wastes no time manipulating Andy into lying about the incident, ensuring they both cover it up as an unfortunate accident.
Fast forward to the present, Judge Crawford (played by Michael Emerson) is a respected figure with a promising federal nomination. But Elsbeth, still suspicious from her earlier stint on jury duty in a case Crawford presided over, is quietly working with Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce), Detective Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), and Officer Rivers to unmask the skeletons in his closet.
FISHING FOR TRUTH IN DEEP WATERS
With federal approval looming for Crawford, Elsbeth and Wagner head to Stockport to dig into the judge’s past. They’re met with the local lore of Sherry’s “accidental” death and a box of keepsakes from her sister. Among the mementos: a slightly blood-stained fanny pack and her diary. Elsbeth’s curiosity is piqued, and she zeroes in on the inconsistencies surrounding the incident. She’s not just sniffing around—she’s reenacting the night at the now-filled-in pool, to the amazement of a retired detective who claims her performance is better than his usual pickleball matches.
Elsbeth’s eccentricities are in full swing—whether it’s her JFK impression, an overwhelming amount of luggage (including two entire bags for snacks), or her fashion enthusiasm. But behind the quirks lies razor-sharp instinct. At this point, Elsbeth isn’t just chasing suspicion—she’s uncovering truth.
CRAWFORD STRIKES BACK
Unknowingly, Elsbeth and Wagner’s investigation leads them right into the jaws of the beast. As they prepare to leave the yacht club, Elsbeth lets her guard down, speaking too openly about the investigation. Judge Crawford overhears and instantly realizes he’s under scrutiny. From that moment, the judge switches into full defense mode—and begins to retaliate.
Crawford’s reach is terrifying. Within days, Elsbeth and her allies begin to feel the heat. Captain Wagner is reprimanded by the police commissioner and warned of internal affairs probing. The budget for his precinct is slashed by 25%—threatening Kaya’s job directly. Elsbeth’s Department of Justice contact, Agent Celetano, is fired. Even her ex-husband receives notice of a misconduct investigation in Illinois that could lead to disbarment.
What was a covert inquiry turns into a full-blown war, and Crawford is pulling every string within reach to protect his legacy. He even personally confronts Elsbeth in a subway station, his tone calm but threatening. He isn’t just defending himself—he’s waging psychological warfare.
EVIDENCE ERASED
Despite the chaos, Elsbeth had managed to gather valuable material: Sherry’s diary, the fanny pack, even a DNA sample taken from Crawford’s scotch glass. But Crawford moves swiftly again, ensuring that all the evidence from Stockport is wiped clean. The implications are clear—Crawford is not only powerful but willing to go to any length to keep his past buried.
Just when the team seems poised to break open the case, it crumbles beneath them, their hard work erased in one ruthless sweep.
A FATAL CONFRONTATION
But Crawford’s control doesn’t last long. On the day of his nomination hearing, he is gunned down on the courthouse steps by Delia (played by Meredith Holzman), the grieving girlfriend of Andy Mertens—the man Crawford had murdered in a previous episode. In her final words to Elsbeth before being arrested, Delia confesses that she had nothing left to lose.
This moment throws the team into stunned silence. Crawford is dead, but not by their hands. Justice is served—but not the way they had hoped. The fallout begins immediately.
With Crawford’s death, the narrative risks being twisted. Kaya raises a troubling point: the judge might now be viewed as a martyr. His name could become a symbol, his sins forgotten. Meanwhile, the people who tried to stop him—Elsbeth, Wagner, Kaya, and Teddy—are left reeling.
Teddy, disillusioned, questions his future in law. “How can I work in a system like this?” he asks. Kaya, facing job insecurity, is filled with dread. Elsbeth, despite her relentless optimism, considers backing down. She fears her investigation has done more harm than good.
But Captain Wagner refuses to let despair win. In an emotional moment that feels like a rallying cry, he addresses the team with quiet strength: “We do what we can every day to try to make the system a little better.” Trying, he says, is the only way forward. It’s not about winning every time—it’s about standing up and acting when it matters.
ELSBETH’S BOLD STYLE, STILL STANDING
Even in the midst of chaos, Elsbeth’s visual storytelling never misses. The episode’s standout fashion moment arrives when she confronts Crawford at the courthouse wearing a striped trench coat—bold, slanted lines symbolizing stormy resistance and unwavering direction. Unlike her typical bright hues, this coat is somber, signaling the seriousness of the moment, but still undeniably her.
As the episode ends, the dust hasn’t settled. The villain may be gone, but his influence still casts a long shadow. The team faces questions, risks, and a system shaken by corruption. Will they continue the fight? Will the truth survive in the aftermath of Crawford’s crimes?
