The Elvis release time was set by HBO Max for Friday, September 2 at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT. Austin Butler plays the title character in Elvis, the King of Rock, and Tom Hanks plays Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager. Presley’s wife, Priscilla, is portrayed by actress Olivia DeJonge. Richard Roxburgh plays Elvis’s father, Vernon, and Helen Thomson plays Elvis’s mother, Gladys. Also included are Xavier Samuel as Scotty Moore, Oscar candidate Kodi Smit-McPhee as Jimmie Rodgers Snow, Natasha Bassett as Dixie Locke, David Wenham as Hank Snow, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. King, and Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling.
According to the synopsis, “the movie examines Elvis Presley’s life and music through the lens of his complex relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The complex relationship between Presley and Parker which spans more than 20 years, from Presley’s ascent to popularity, is explored in the narrative against the backdrop of the changing cultural landscape and loss of youth in America. One of the most important and influential figures in Elvis Presley’s life, Priscilla Presley, is at the center of that journey.
The supporting cast also features Josh McConville as Sam Phillips, Adam Dunn as Bill Black, Kate Mulvany as Marion Keisker, Gareth Davies as Bones Howe, Charles Grounds as Billy Smith, and Dacre Montgomery as TV director Steve Binder. Singer/songwriter Yola has been cast as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, model Alton Mason has been cast as Little Richard, Gary Clark Jr. has been cast as Arthur Crudup, and artist Shonka Dukureh has been cast as Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton.
From a screenplay he co-authored with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner, Luhrmann wrote and directed Elvis. With Courtenay Valenti and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers, Catherine Martin, Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick, and Schuyler Weiss are the producers.
Elvis, which can now be rented on Video On Demand, was first shown in theatres on June 24, 2022, in the United States. The movie is currently obtainable for rental on VOD platforms like Prime Video, Vudu, and YouTube.
