Etoile on Prime Video is an interesting look at how the lives of two ballet companies are connected. As they work together, they experience both professional and personal changes. This show introduces the idea of an exchange program for artists between the Metropolitan Ballet Theater (MBT), whose artistic director is Jack McMillan, and Le Ballet National, which is led by Geneviève Lavigne. Jack was against the idea at first, but his opposition fades when he learns that the program could host Cheyenne Toussaint, one of the most famous ballerinas in the world. But this partnership has effects that go far beyond the studio, especially when a crisis forces Jack to think about how he leads and what the future holds for MBT.
NICHOLAS LEUTWYLEK’S FALLING HEALTH
Nicholas Leutwylek played by David Haig, who has been the creative director of MBT for a long time and is Jack’s best friend, is very important to the story. They’ve known each other for decades, and Nicholas has always worked at MBT. His health starts to get worse, though, and what used to be normal for him—short periods of coma—becomes a sad reality very quickly. Jack’s calm response when he hears that Nicholas is very sick comes from their long history together. Jack has been used to the idea that Nicholas will always get better over the years, but this time things get worse.
Nicholas’s health is getting worse, and the thought that he might die sends shockwaves through the company. Jack has to face the inevitable for the first time: who will take over as creative director after Nicholas? When the doctors tell Jack to talk to Nicholas’ family, this choice becomes even more important. Jack is feeling a lot of different emotions at the same time. He is struggling with the thought of losing his mentor and friend, and he also has to plan for MBT’s future without him.
THE CONFLICT OF SUCCESSION: A BREACH OF TRUST?
Jack isn’t ready for the possibility that Nicholas will die, which gives Crispin Shamblee, a businessman with his own plans, a chance to suggest an unusual solution. He thinks Cheyenne Toussaint should be MBT’s next creative director. At first, Jack doesn’t want to think about it, but his recent experiences with the exchange program make him change his mind. Cheyenne is at the top of her ballet career, but she is having trouble finding her own purpose. Jack thinks she could bring a new and bold vision to the company after she makes a mistake during a performance that shows she is having trouble with herself.
But giving the job to Cheyenne is a double-edged sword. For starters, it makes things difficult between Jack and Geneviève, who trusts him, and this choice could break that trust. It also puts Cheyenne in a tough spot because she was happy as a ballerina before the job offer, but now she has to think about her future and goals again. As the story goes on, this brave move throws off MBT’s delicate balance between tradition and change.
NICHOLAS PULLS THROUGH—AND EVERYTHING CHANGES
A shocking turn of events happens just as Jack is getting ready for a future without Nicholas. Nicholas comes out of his coma, which surprises everyone, but especially Jack. While the recovery is good news, it also brings an unexpected problem: Jack’s offer to Cheyenne is no longer useful. Nicholas coming back to work for the company messes up Jack’s plans, and he has to deal with the results of his choice to hire Cheyenne. The relationship between the three characters changes when Nicholas goes back to work at MBT, and the tension between Jack and Cheyenne grows.
Nicholas is no longer a passive figure in Cheyenne’s career; instead, he is a real obstacle that makes it harder for her to find her place in the company. People are curious about how their professional relationship will develop because of the problems they still have with each other.
A STORY OF CHANGE AND SACRIFICE
Etoile looks at the complicated relationships in the world of ballet, from Jack and Nicholas’ close bond to Cheyenne’s struggles to find her true calling. The show is mostly about the tough choices that come with being a leader, trust, and the fact that things will always change. At the show’s center is Jack’s emotional journey as he struggles between his duty to Nicholas and his desire to protect MBT’s future. As the characters face problems both inside and outside of the ballet studio, the show shows how sacrifices can have an effect on others and how unpredictable life can be.
