Isabel Marshall arrives, groggy from the travel. She vomits and then tells Elena and Ruby that she wants to be brave enough to live in the real world instead of hiding in her books. Isabel recommends R.S. Coldwater’s Agnes series and pulls them out of her purse for Ruby. Isabel says Agnes was her first love. Elena gives Isabel a letter and guides her to a fancy door. Isabel enters the realm of R.C. Coldwater and meets Agnes’ doppelganger Rachel. Isabel presents herself as Reggie Coldwater’s New York cousin. Isabel is given her room and when Rachel kisses her on the cheek, she kisses Rachel on the lips.
Elena meets Brian Cole(Eric Winter) in a deserted region of the island and he requests a fantasy that will test his survivalist skills. Elena takes his gear and leads him to the start of his machete-only trek. but he needs no help. Brian makes camp and builds a fire. His machete is lost, so he cries and sees who is out there.
Isabel (Caitlin Stasey) digs deeper and discovers Rachel writes the Agnes books for her husband to copy and publish. Isabel hides as Rachel burns the originals. Isabel informs her that Rachel is R.S. Coldwater, not Reggie. A woman author won’t be published, so Rachel (Gillian Saker) pledges Isabel to secret. Isabel remembers Rachel’s love scene from her writing. They flutter over a peony. Then Elena checks in to see how things are going.
On the way to school, Brian hits a young man with a stone. Brian recognizes the youngster is himself after a closer look. Brian and his youth self argue. Young Brian asks about Hope Emory, and Brian says they got married. Until Brian informs him they’re divorced. They get into a fight, and Brian gets hurt. Elena appears and offers help, but Brian refuses. Brian coaches himself through a rescue. Brian can’t get his leg out of the boulder, but he keeps trying.
Reggie is beating Isabel at cards when a man enters. Walsh (Dominic Burgess), the publisher, is obnoxious and rude. Mr. Walsh brings up the rumor that Reggie is writing the novels for Rachel. He forces Reggie to discuss the new book. Isabel saves him by delivering him the manuscript and assisting Walsh. Rachel cleans up the fireplace where she disposed of the original manuscript. Isabel joins her to discuss liberty. Walsh interrupts, having overheard the talk, and threatens to cancel their contract. Isabel uses facts she knows about the historical Walsh. He has no choice. Ruby visits Elena’s workplace to gush over Agnes. Elena rushes home to finish her own copy of the novel. Rachel thanks Isabel in her room for helping her with Walsh. They kiss and sleep together. Elena visits Isabel when Rachel sneaks back to her room in the morning. Isabel wishes to bring Rachel into the present. Elena vanishes while Isabel works on the plan. Elena calls Ruby from her room.
Brian asks why Brian puts himself in danger so often. Brian predicts that a group of bullies will kidnap him and leave him left in the Adirondacks without a coat or supplies in a few months. Brian admits he hasn’t recovered from that incident and has been striving to outlast the elements ever since. Brian wakes up alone on top of the cliff he fell off of, unhurt. Brian emerges from his trek, grateful to Elena for allowing him to reconnect with his past.
on the other hand, Ruby, in period costume, interrupts Isabel’s invitation to Rachel. In her absence, Ruby tells Isabel that the Agnes novels will never be finished, and the path Rachel blazes for women’s independence will never be realized. It’s as if they never saw Rachel. Elena is worried about Isabel’s return. Ruby describes Agnes’ latest novel’s unexpected ending when Agnes’ lover reappears after missing. Elena allows Isabel to return to Rachel’s realm and live out her history. Isabel seizes the chance and vanishes into history..
