Somebody Somewhere Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

This episode, titled “Manhappiness,” features a major argument between Sam (Bridget Everett) and Joel (Jeff Hiller) two buddies. Since Joel lied to Sam about his new girlfriend, she has been giving him silent treatment. Their heated argument and the resulting feelings are the episode’s central focus.  One of the show’s regulars, Fred Rococo, is instrumental in this episode. He acts as a peacemaker between Sam and Joel, hoping they may remain friends. Despite Fred’s efforts to reconcile the two friends, Sam remains distant. In a dramatic turn of events, Joel unexpectedly interrupts Sam and Fred’s ice cream date, leading to a long-awaited confrontation between the two. Sam vents her hurt and anger at Joel despite his attempts at apologies and reconciliation. Sam expresses her sentiments of betrayal and her fear that Joel’s new connection may cause their friendship to deteriorate in this passionate argument. In a dramatic moment, Sam reveals that she doesn’t desire a romantic relationship with him (for reasons that are clear to her), but she simply cannot bear the thought of him walking out of her life. Sam’s face is a canvas of hurt and fear, while Joel’s expression is imbued with sorrow and regret. The scene’s emotional effect was hailed as “heartbreaking,” which spoke volumes about the strength of their connection.

The episode focuses on the tensions between Sam and Joel, but it also highlights Sam’s maturation and desire to make amends in interpersonal relationships. Sam’s connection with her sister Tricia, with whom she had a disagreement in the previous episode, is also addressed. Sam doesn’t cut Tricia Miller (Mary Catherine Garrison out of her life and is there for her when she’s having a tough time, despite their conflicts. Sam’s outfit during the argument, her conversation with a neighbor who had been arrested for drugs, and Tricia’s living room full of “Cunt” pillows are just a few of the amusing and noteworthy scenes in this episode. In the season finale, our two protagonists finally reconcile, but it’s not until they come together at the funeral of Sam’s beloved singing instructor, Darlene. In this scene, Sam graciously allows Joel to occupy her pew at church.

Towards the episode’s close, Sam gets a text from Joel saying that their vocal instructor, Darlene Edwards (Barbara Robertson), has passed away. The news hits Sam hard, and she begins thinking about her relationship with Darlene. She plays a cassette tape of their final session together and performs “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” as an homage to Darlene. However, moments later, she leans in and whispers a heartfelt apology. Joel offers another apology and the three tentatively plan to spend time together, including Joel’s boyfriend Brad Schraeder (Tim Bagley ). As Fred’s wedding approaches, Sam is forced to confront her own role in the conflict. During rehearsals for both singing and officiating the ceremony, she begins to reflect on her actions. This final scene serves as a reminder to treasure one’s connections while one still has the chance.
