When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 12 Recap: As the school year ends and graduation draws near, people in Hope Valley get ready for a series of events that will change their lives. Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) and Nathan (Kevin McGarry) are looking forward to a fun summer together. For their part, Lucas (Chris McNally) and Edie (Alice Assef) are in a race with Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) and Bill (Jack Wagner) to find hidden gold. At the same time, the town comes together to surprise Minnie (Natasha Burnett). But just as fresh starts look like they are on the way, Elizabeth, Nathan, and their families’ future is changed by an unexpected choice.
A SEASON OF CHANGE
At the beginning of the episode, Elizabeth writes in her journal about how spring is changing into summer, a time of new beginnings and change. Nathan and Little Jack (Hyland Goodrich) play catch outside in the nice weather. Every day Jack gets stronger, and he keeps getting insulin shots, which gives Elizabeth hope for a good future.
At the schoolhouse, students get ready to present their final projects. Emily, Angela, and Timmy are all excited about graduation because it means the end of one journey and the start of a new one.
At the same time, Rosemary and Bill are talking about the mystery of the missing gold at the saloon. She wants to find the treasure because she thinks there is more to the Garrison case than meets the eye. Bill is skeptical and reminds her that they don’t have any new leads. That is, until Rosemary has an idea: she should talk to Edie about her new law practice in Hope Valley during an interview.
THE SEARCH FOR GOLD
Oliver (John J. Miller) the Ranger, asks Nathan at the office if he can leave early for his school presentation. Nathan agrees, but he also gives Oliver a form that says he should graduate with honors from Mountie training and be sent to Fort McNeil as his next assignment. Oliver feels down and knows that he may have to leave Hope Valley.
Rosemary meets Edie somewhere else, and Edie gives her a key clue without knowing it. She talks about an old map that her late uncle drew and; how he left her his ranch when he died. Rosemary is interested in what is being said. Could the gold be hidden on the ranch?
At the schoolhouse, Elizabeth is proud to show off the projects that her students have made. Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller) and Oliver’s stream project wows Lucas, and Angela talks about her study on how music can help plants grow. Elizabeth sees that Minnie is sad because Angela is leaving soon and comes up with a way to cheer her up.
Later, Florence (Loretta Walsh) and Mike (Ben Rosenbaum) are asked by Elizabeth and Mei (Amanda Wong) to plan a surprise for Angela and Minnie. Elizabeth gets a letter at the mercantile from Charlotte Thornton, Little Jack’s grandmother, asking her to think about moving to Cape Fullerton so Jack can get better medical care. Elizabeth appreciates the advice, but she doesn’t want to leave their life in Hope Valley.
DECISIONS AND DISCOVERIES
For their surprise project, Hickam and Mei find out what Angela likes to do at the café. While this is going on, Lucas and Edie talk about her uncle’s past, which leads them to a new idea: her uncle may have moved the stolen gold to keep it safe. Lucas agrees to look for it with her.
In Bill’s office, he, Rosemary, and Nathan look at the ranch map that Edie’s uncle gave them. They come to the conclusion that he must have seen the Garrisons bury the gold and then moved it himself. A larger picture of a well marked “where wishes come true” is shown on the map. They thought this might be the new place where the gold was hiding, so they went to check it out.
In the meantime, Elizabeth tells Nathan that Oliver’s grades are getting worse. Nathan thinks Oliver is failing on purpose so he doesn’t have to leave Hope Valley and maybe even Allie. Later, Elizabeth talks to Oliver about it at the stables. He is honest and says that even though he wants to be a Mountie, he never really grew up. Taking time to enjoy life is important, Elizabeth tells him, and she offers to talk to Nathan on his behalf.
GETTING GOLD
When Edie and Lucas get to her uncle’s ranch, they find a jar full of coins, one of which is a rare double-headed eagle coin. Rosemary, Nathan, and Bill show up just as they start digging near the well, confirming what they already thought. They work together to find a locked trunk that has the missing gold inside.
When they get back to the Mountie office, they put the whole story together. Uncle Edie hid the gold and used some of it to pay for Edie’s law school. Inside the trunk, they find a secret message from him that tells them what he plans to do and that he wants Edie to have the rest of the treasure. She can now do what her uncle asked and use the money for good now that the mystery is solved.
A HEARTFELT FAREWELL
At the café, people from all over town show up to surprise Minnie with a quilt she made herself for Angela that is full of symbols of her favorite things. Minnie tells her friends and the community how much she loves them while she is overwhelmed with thanks.
Afterward, Elizabeth watches the graduation ceremony at the saloon. Timmy, Angela, and Emily all get their diplomas, which means they are done with school. The party goes on with more music and dancing, and everyone in the town shares in the happiness of the moment.
A NEW PATH FOR ELIZABETH AND NATHAN
Liz and Nathan have a quiet moment together as the night comes to a close. That letter from Charlotte made her worry about Jack’s health, she tells him. Nathan tells her that they will make the right choice because he wants what’s best for Jack.
At the very end, Nathan and Allie make a big decision—they’re ready to fully accept Elizabeth and Little Jack as part of their new family. As they stand together and look out at their beloved Hope Valley. they know one thing for sure—love will always lead them to happiness.
