In this episode of Grantchester, English vicar Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) is adjusting to married life with Bonnie Davenport (Charlotte Ritchie), who is pregnant with their child. Will preaches at the beginning of the episode while also planning a biker charity race. The race is attended by Geordie, Will’s companion in investigating crimes, and his family. A biker named Carl dazzles the spectators with his prowess during the race. The following day, Carl is discovered dead, and Will and Geordie believe foul play was involved.
The members of a competing motorcycle club are questioned, but it turns out that they are completely innocent. Although Geordie’s employer advises him that he can take an early retirement, he is not yet prepared to quit the force. Geordie accuses Will of having an affair with his boss’s fiance, which exacerbates their conflict. When Will looks into Carl’s death, he finds that Stephanie, a female biker who had been seen with Carl and Jimmy, another biker, was the one who sabotaged Carl’s bike. Stephanie admits that despite not killing Carl, she had affection for him.
As the episode goes on, Will interacts with Bonnie’s son Ernie, who is concerned for his father’s safety, as well as a scenario with a troubled man. Will believes that Ron, Carl’s father, tampered with the bike in order to guarantee his son’s victory. But it turns out that Jimmy killed Carl with a crowbar and staged his demise to appear to be an accident because he wanted to please his father. Will observes the painful exchange between Jimmy and his father.
After Bonnie’s mother has a stroke, Will and Bonnie argue angrily at home, and Bonnie resolves to go see her parents despite being heavily pregnant. Will jumps on his motorcycle and rushes off while feeling overwhelmed and conflicted, but fatally collides with a man who runs onto the road. Will frantically tries to revive the unconscious stranger as the episode comes to a close.
The difficulties that Will and Geordie endure as they look into Carl’s death, deal with personal matters, and face their own demons are highlighted in this episode. It also makes one wonder about Will’s parenting skills and the effects of his rash decisions. Viewers are left in suspense after the stunning conclusion, wondering what will happen to the unnamed man and how it will affect Will and those around him.
