Grantchester Season 8 Episode 2 Recap

Geordie successfully exonerates Will of any wrongdoing in a tragic motorbike accident at the start of the episode. The characters go to an art show displaying Amedeo Modiglianis Reclining Nude series in quest of a more upbeat atmosphere. While Will is taking in the light streaming through the church’s stained-glass windows, Cathy, dressed in a stunning smock, interrupts him to take him to view an Italian loaned painting. They run with Geordie at the exhibition, who grudgingly accepts to go with them on his day off since he worries about Will’s safety after causing a death. The group meets Dr. Abbot, a snobby professor who is obsessed with the Reclining Nude paintings.

Young coeds protest in the middle of the exhibition, calling attention to the unfair treatment of women’s bodies. They contend that while admiring feminine nudity is considered acceptable in art, it is not appropriate in reality. The painting of the Reclining Nude is stolen as the protest degenerates into chaos.  Later, a porter called Peter is discovered dead in a hallway with a candlestick to his head. When Geordie and Will start their inquiry, Sheila, a woman claiming to be Peter’s wife, comes under suspicion. She disputes being involved in the murder, though.

Geordie and Will learn during the investigation that Peter had been married but had been concealing it in order to protect his job. They come across a letter written by a woman by the name of Sheila, who expresses her love for them both and her belief that their unborn child will require a father. Surprisingly, it turns out that Sheila is Peter’s real wife, and she admits that he had claimed to be single for the job and had only written to her via letters.

Will is currently dealing with the effects of the fatal accident. His friends are worried about his withdrawal and distance, especially Bonnie Davenport (Charlotte Ritchie), his wife. Will struggles with talking about his feelings and turns to his faith for comfort.

Geordie and Will believe Josephine, the bedder, might be Sheila’s guise as the investigation goes on. They approach Josephine, who eventually admits the truth: She had gone to meet Peter herself after noticing how unhappy Sheila was. She lost her temper and snatched the candlestick when Peter rejected her, accidentally murdering him. Sheila was framed after she panicked and stole the Reclining Nude painting from Dr. Abbot’s office to make it appear like a theft. Desperation and tiredness motivated her acts.

A side story featuring Leonard, who owns a halfway house, is also featured in this episode. He refuses to hire a housekeeper out of concern that doing so could indicate he views the residence as temporary. He does, however, come to the conclusion that having a housekeeper would help with the success of the home.

After Bonnie departs to visit her parents, Will is left alone as the episode comes to a close. He struggles internally suggesting that he may face difficulties in upcoming episodes as he deals with his unresolved feelings. The audience is left wondering if Will will have enough time to resolve his difficulties prior to the baby’s birth with only three episodes left in the season. The narrative skillfully combines murder mystery themes with character issues, giving the characters depth and capturing the interest of the audience.
