Released on Netflix on April 25, 2025, HAVOC is a gripping neo-noir action thriller written and directed by Gareth Evans. With an intense and gritty tone, the film stars Tom Hardy as Detective Walker, alongside Jessie Mei Li, Timothy Olyphant, Forest Whitaker, and Justin Cornwell. Set in a corrupt, crime-ridden city, HAVOC follows a detective caught in a brutal fight to rescue a politician’s wayward son while navigating a complex web of criminal enterprises, dirty cops, and revenge-seeking gangsters.
Tom Hardy’s character, Walker, is not your typical hero. A physically broken, morally compromised detective with ties to a powerful businessman, Lawrence (played by Forest Whitaker), Walker operates in the greyest of moral zones. After a drug deal spirals into chaos, Walker’s world is thrown into a relentless cycle of violence, secrets, and survival.
PLOT OVERVIEW
The story kicks off when a drug deal involving Charlie (Justin Cornwell), the estranged son of wealthy mogul Lawrence, goes violently wrong. Tsui (Jeremy Ang Jones), a member of the Triad, is killed during the the drug deal exchange, sparking a wave of retribution from his mother, known only as Mother (Yeo Yann Yann), a high-ranking Triad leader.
Walker, who is deeply indebted to Lawrence, is ordered to find Charlie and bring him back. Alongside his rookie partner Ellie (Jessie Mei Li), Walker unravels a city drowning in corruption. But things get messy when it turns out Charlie and his girlfriend Mia (Quelin Sepulveda) were behind the drug theft that ignited the firestorm. Now, everyone — from dirty cops Vincent (Timothy Olyphant) and Jake (Richard Harrington) to the vengeful Triad — is after them.
The film traces a violent Christmas night full of deadly shootouts, betrayals, and narrow escapes. The journey leads Walker to his fishing shack, where the final showdown takes place.
IS WALKER ALIVE?
This is the central question many are left asking at the end of HAVOC. After an intense night that leaves many dead, the fate of Tom Hardy’s character hangs in the balance — but director Gareth Evans provides a bit of clarity.
Let’s break it down.
Following the brutal gunfight at the Medusa Club, Walker manages to get Charlie and Mia to his shack — hoping to end the night and finally free himself from Lawrence’s grip. But things go sideways fast. When Walker tries to inform Lawrence that Charlie is safe, he unintentionally exposes their location to Mother. She has captured Lawrence and is hunting vengeance for her son.
A relentless wave of violence crashes into the shack. The Assassin (Michelle Waterson), who has stalked Walker all night, arrives to finish him off. In a visceral brawl filled with bone-crunching hits and gritty stunts, Walker ultimately survives by impaling her with a harpoon. This fight is the physical and emotional peak for Hardy’s character, who has relied on brute force more than words throughout the film.
But the chaos doesn’t stop there. Triad members hold Charlie and Mia hostage. Mother forces Lawrence to choose between his son’s life or revenge for Tsui. Charlie attempts to protect Mia by putting himself in the line of fire, while Lawrence refuses to shoot. Before the situation can spiral further, Ellie shows up with Vincent and Jake.
In a tense reveal, Ellie claims that Ching (Sunny Pang) betrayed Mother’s son. Ching fires back, blaming Vincent and Jake for the murder. The fragile peace breaks when Jake opens fire, shooting Charlie. Lawrence sacrifices himself by taking the bullet meant for his son.
In the chaos that follows, Vincent kills Ching and grabs the cocaine he’s been hunting all night. But Charlie, fueled by the loss of his father, kills Jake. Ellie urges Charlie and Mia to surrender, warning that the city is still dangerous for them. But they choose to flee instead.
Meanwhile, Walker confronts Vincent in a final duel set against train tracks — a cinematic homage to old-school Westerns. There’s a tense standoff, loaded with moral weight. In one quick draw, Walker shoots and kills Vincent, eliminating the last person who truly knows how corrupt Walker has been.
Walker slumps against a train, wounded and exhausted, as police lights approach. It’s a quiet, ambiguous moment. Ellie arrives, and in a surprising moment of respect, Walker tells her she’s a good cop and urges her to arrest him. It’s a significant shift for a man who’s always used violence and silence as tools.
So, does Walker die?
No — director Gareth Evans has confirmed that Walker survives. Though the film ends with Walker motionless, leaning against a train and covered in blood, Evans makes it clear: “He’s alive.”
Still, what happens next is left open-ended on purpose. Does he turn himself in? Try to disappear and start over? This ambiguity allows viewers to decide what kind of man Walker truly is. Is he redeemable? Is he capable of change?
WHO DIES IN ‘HAVOC’?
The body count in HAVOC is high. The story begins with Tsui’s death during the drug deal, which kickstarts the Triad’s revenge. Corrupt officer Hayes (Gordon Alexander) is killed in the Medusa Club shootout. Mia’s uncle Raul (Luis Guzmán) also meets a grim fate.
At the hospital, Ching murders Officer Cortez (Serhat Metin) and his wife Angela (Jill Winternitz), heightening the sense of lawlessness. The fishing shack becomes the final resting place for several major players:
Lawrence dies protecting his son.
Mother is killed by Ching.
Ching is gunned down by Vincent.
Jake is killed by Charlie.
The Assassin is impaled by Walker.
Vincent is killed by Walker in the film’s final shootout.
Walker’s fate in HAVOC serves as a symbolic mirror of the film’s theme: survival in a world without clean lines. He may be alive, but the scars — both physical and emotional — run deep. As the screen fades with Walker propped against the train, sirens flashing, and the city still in shadows, the film leaves us with one lasting question: can someone who’s broken rebuild?
For now, one thing is clear: Walker is still breathing.
