The Idol Season 1 Release Date

Mark your calendars for the highly-anticipated premiere of The Idol, airing Sunday, June 4th at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Coming soon to HBO and streaming on Max.

HBO’s The Idol Plot

In The Idol, we follow the journey of Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), a pop star attempting to make a comeback after a mental breakdown. The show is intentionally sensational and gritty, with characters discussing their desire to create massive, provocative hits and engaging in questionable behavior such as locking intimacy coordinators in closets. The dialogue is often exaggerated, with lines like “Can’t we just let people indulge in sex, drugs, and hot girls?” adding to the show’s overall edginess. In this thrilling drama, The Weeknd takes on the role of a charismatic cult leader and self-help guru who becomes romantically involved with rising pop sensation Jocelyn, portrayed by Depp. The pair’s relationship is anything but smooth sailing, as they navigate the ups and downs of their tumultuous connection.

The Idol Season 1 Episode Guide

The first season of the show will consist of six episodes, thanks to HBO‘s series order.  In the premiere episode, Depp is frequently seen without a shirt, while the show features numerous references to controversial cult filmmakers like Paul Verhoeven and Gaspar Noé. The initial reception of the first two episodes at Cannes earlier this month was less than favorable, with critics labeling it as a “toxic man’s fantasy.” At one point, its Rotten Tomatoes rating was a rare 9%, but it has since climbed to 25%.

The Idol Season 1 Trailer

On May 30, HBO dropped the first complete trailer for the upcoming series featuring the talented Lily-Rose Depp and the renowned musician, Abel Tesfaye (also known as The Weeknd). In the trial, the focus is on the intense romance brewing between Jocelyn and Tedros. However, there are concerns from those close to Jocelyn that Tedros may be manipulating her thoughts.

Ahead of its TV premiere on June 4th, the show has released new footage. In May, the series made its debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

This season’s most talked-about television program was The Idol, stirring up quite a bit of controversy. Recently, Rolling Stone ran a contentious piece about the making of “The Idol.” The story said that once Levinson took over as director, the production got unruly. Levinson’s creative process was attacked by the cast and crew, who pointed to setbacks such as rewrites and reshoots as examples. It has been said that Levinson diluted the show’s message by increasing unsettling sexual content and nudity. Amy Seimetz, the film’s first director, had her own set of problems highlighted in the piece.

On April 21st, Abel Tesfaye dropped the debut track titled “Double Fantasy” from the show’s soundtrack. Incorporating imagery from the series, the music video for the song also showcases the talents of Future. On April 17, HBO dropped a tantalizing teaser trailer for the series, featuring the iconic Britney Spears track “Gimme More.” However, the trailer has since been taken down from YouTube.
