This week’s HOUSE OF THE DRAGON episode, “The Red Sowing,” shows a very important event in the history of Westeros. Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy, gathers her family’s children from other relationships in the hopes that some of them will become dragonriders. With this risky move, called “The Red Sowing,” these “dragonseeds” will be joined with dragons to make Team Black’s forces stronger.
In the first scene of the episode, two dragons named Syrax and Seasmoke fight on a beach. Ewan Mitchell plays Addam of Hull, who talks to Rhaenyra and says he wants to learn how dragonriders do things and serve her. Rhaenyra is cautious at first but impressed by Addam’s commitment and his claim that the dragon picked him. She likes that Addam, a shipwright for House Velaryon, comes from a humble background. Happy with his sincerity, she decides to take him back to Dragonstone.
Rhaenyra’s black council, on the other hand, is not as excited about the news. They don’t like the idea of a commoner riding a dragon, and they don’t understand why Rhaenyra chose to treat Addam like a guest. Corlys Velaryon, played by Steve Toussaint, tells Addams to be patient, which could mean that there is a link between the two families. Rhaenyra and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), meanwhile, talk about how they might be able to get more dragonriders from the Targaryen jerks, which would change the balance of power.
Rhaenyra agrees with the plan to raise an army of jerks because she sees potential in the children of House Targaryen who are not her biological children. When Corlys finds Addam, he recognizes him as his unacknowledged son, which shows that he has a stronger bond with the Velaryon family.
A new character named Lord Oscar Tully is also introduced in this episode. He promises to be loyal to Rhaenyra even though he has doubts about Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). The riverlords who have gathered at Harrenhal respect Oscar because he shows that he is a good leader. He disagrees with Daemon’s choices and the things that House Blackwood does when Daemon tells them to. This leads to a tense fight, and in the end, Daemon kills Lord Blackwood.
In an unexpected turn of events, Daemon sees or remembers King Viserys (Paddy Considine), who is thinking about the responsibilities of being king. This time of reflection makes me wonder what Daemon really wants and why he does what he does.
Back at Dragonstone, Jace (Harry Collett) is worried that his mother’s plan will make him less of an heir, which makes him upset. Rhaenyra tries to reassure him, but she stresses how important her plan is. Rhaenyra’s servant Elinda spreads the word that Targaryen jerks are being called to Dragonstone, which makes the potential recruits, like Ulf and Hugh, a little uncertain.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON SEASON 2 EPISODE 7 RECAP: ENDING EXPLAINED
The tensions rise in the second-to-last episode of Season 2 of “HOUSE OF THE DRAGON” as Rhaenyra deals with the news that Steffon Darklyn failed to bond with the dragon Seasmoke. The dragon was then seen with a new rider, Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty), who quickly bowed his knee to join Team Black.
Rhaenyra knows that dragonseeds don’t have to be nobles, so she calls out to all the jerks in King’s Landing who have Valyrian blood and invites them to Dragonstone to try bonding with the dragons. As many people die trying to tame the powerful creatures, this project, called “The Sowing of the Seeds,” is very dangerous. The process known as “The Sowing of the Seeds,” of dragon bonding is dangerous and full of chaos. Many of the dragonseeds die in terrible ways. Despite the dangers, a few new dragonriders emerge.
Addam gets close to Seasmoke. He is Alyn’s older brother and a jerk to Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint). In the beginning of the season, we saw Addam watching the dragon. It looks like Seasmoke had also noticed him. With anger toward his father still burning inside, Addam quickly joins Rhaenyra’s cause.
Ulf the White
Ulf the White, played by Tom Bennett, is proud to say that he is related to Jaehaerys the Conciliator, who was king before Viserys, played by Paddy Considine. Ulf was unsure at first about being a dragonseed, but he eventually answered Rhaenyra’s call and found Silverwing, a dragon that Jaehaerys’ wife used to ride. Ulf forms a bond with Silverwing, which shows how brave he is and how long his family names are.
Hugh Hammer
Hugh Hammer, played by Kielan Bew, runs away to Dragonstone because things are getting worse in King’s Landing under Team Green’s rule. He shows the largest dragon after Vhagar is Vermithor, also called the “Bronze Fury,” that he is brave by taking care of a female dragonseed. The dragon likes what he did, and now he is one of the new dragonriders. Rhaenyra is stronger now that three more dragons are ready for the Dance of the Dragons.
In King’s Landing, political drama continues as Lord Jasper tells Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) about the new rider on Seasmoke. Alicent (Olivia Cooke), on the other hand, thinks about what she did in the past and decides to take a break from the chaos by spending time with Ser Rickard. Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), who is still healing, is having a hard time with his injuries, and things are getting worse between the characters.
At the end of the episode, there is a dramatic scene of a dragon flying over King’s Landing to announce that a new rider has arrived. Aemond, played by Ewan Mitchell, climbs on Vhagar to stop the threat, but when he sees that Rhaenyra’s team now has three dragons, he runs away.
