Creator Natasha Rothwell, who also plays Melissa, the lead character, How to Die Alone is an American comedy series. Melissa, a middle-aged Black employee at JFK airport, is the show’s focus. Following a near-death experience, Melissa sets out on a quest to rediscover herself and begin living life to the fullest. She confronts her worst fears, discovers unfulfilled passions, and gains self-love along the journey.
How to Die Alone Season 1 Episode 7 Recap
In Episode 7, Melissa’s journey is about to take — a big turn. She makes the risky choice to reveal her true feelings to Alex (Jocko Sims) the man she has a crush on. But Alex has to head out soon for his wedding in “Maui”. Melissa runs to the airport to meet him before his flight, determined not to let this time pass by. She gets there, though, too late—the jet has already taken off.
Melissa goes to the “Thai” restaurant where she used to work because she is defeated and lost. While she is sitting there thinking about her predicament, Alex shows up out of the blue to pick up takeout, seemingly by happenstance. Taken aback, Melissa tries to hide beneath the table but eventually extends an invitation for him to have supper with her. Over crab rangoon, the two get back together, and Melissa apologizes for how their relationship ended. She is shocked to learn that Alex purposefully missed his flight. He confides in her as well about his uncertainties around his relationship with Julie, his fiancée.
Their evening becomes filled with adventures, beginning with Melissa assisting Alex in selecting a wedding tie that isn’t the awful seafoam green that his fiancée had selected. They have a great chemistry and lighthearted banter as they explore – New York City and even sing karaoke together. There’s a brief sense that Melissa and Alex could resume their romance.
But as the evening goes on, it becomes evident that their bond isn’t as solid as it once appeared to be. Alex retreats as Melissa kisses him at last in an attempt to reignite their passion. He storms out, angry and bewildered, and Melissa follows, pleading with him not to get married. She has to tell Alex straight out that she loves him and that she is being sincere about her feelings. Melissa, though — falters, unable to say the words. Rather, she admits that she’s too afraid, which hurts and disappoints Alex. The episode ends with Melissa standing alone and wondering if her feelings for Alex were real or just a sign that she was afraid to move on with her life.
