“I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT YOU” is an argentine movie by the director Santiago Requejo. The movie is focused on Carlos (Adrián Suar), who is a simple corporate employee, although he is an obsessive phone user. His obsession plays out on his wife Adela (Paz Vega), and their two teenagers. Indeed, Carlos still struggles to leave work at work and be physically and mentally present for his family, and he is glued to the phone at work as well.

There is a day that after a phone problem during the car use, Carlos decides to get a new phone. Sadly, the new one has been stolen, so he has to by his old phone back at a higher price. His alcoholism comes to the forefront during a wedding, when he deletes all the data on Adela’s phone, and when she demands him to give it to her – she pours it into the water in rage. Adela feeling irritated with Carlos always using phone, decides to leave him.

Carlos who still wants to take her back goes to group meetings that are aimed at helping phone addicts but he cannot leave his phone alone at first. Whenever he accompanies his family on a holiday, he sneaks off to take work-related calls. Adela finally decides to leave him for good after getting frustrated with his failure to abandon his phone for his family. Finally, Carlos razes a new phone though the event only makes him more lonely. In the presence of his support group, he is able to understand his wrong doing and leaves for the airport to prevent Adella from leaving. Finally, Carlos and Adela make up for their betrayal and decide to try again.

IS “I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT YOU” BASED ON A TRUE STORY?

“I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT YOU” is not based on a true story. The film is entirely fictional, focusing on the issue of smartphone addiction. Although the story of Carlos and his phone obsession is relatable and reflects a real problem many people face, the characters and events are made up and not taken from real life.

‘I Can’t Live Without You’ originally ‘No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti’ is a Spanish language comedy film which has been directed by Santiago Requejo who has also written the screenplay along with Josse Gabriel Lorenzo. The film deals with one of the most essential problems in our society as a comedy – the addiction to mobile phones, a concept based on the psychological disorder called nomophobia. Although it shows a modern issue that every woman can come across in some way, the story is fiction, and the characters are not real.

Nomophobia thereby is a combination of the words no, mobile phone and phobia, which literally depicts the Likert scaled fear of being without a mobile phone. The condition is characterised by feelings of anxiety when one is unable to access the device maybe because it was left behind or ran out of battery. In the early 2014s, the research pointed that 84% of the population could not handle being away from their phones for a day. Since the dependence on digital technology has escalated in the recent decade, so also the impact of nomophobia has increased.

Though Carlos’ phone addiction is central to the narrative, the film also emphasizes the impact of this addiction on his family. The central conflict arises when his family grows weary of his constant distraction and decides to distance themselves from him. Adela’s decision to divorce Carlos serves as a wake-up call, prompting him to take action to mend his ways.

Carlos’ journey—attending therapy sessions and making personal sacrifices—demonstrates his willingness to change and prioritize his family. This storyline, while exaggerated for comedic effect, highlights the real-life struggle of balancing personal relationships with technology.

“I Can’t Live Without You” is not based on a true story; it is a work of fiction that explores the effects of smartphone addiction through humor and exaggeration. However, its portrayal of Carlos’ struggles resonates with many viewers, reflecting the broader issue of nomophobia. The film succeeds in shedding light on a contemporary problem while delivering an entertaining and relatable narrative.
