Father Renaud, played by Sebastian Roché, has been one of the most ruthless characters in Paramount+’s 1923. As the head of a Catholic boarding school for Indigenous children, he represents the harsh reality of forced assimilation. His relentless pursuit of Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) has been a major storyline, but does his character meet his end in Season 2? And if so, does that mean Roché has left the show for good? TV Acute breaks it all down.
Teonna Rainwater Finally Ends Father Renaud’s Reign of Terror
Throughout 1923, Father Renaud proves to be a dangerous adversary. After Teonna fights back against the abuse she faces at his religious institution—killing the nuns who tormented her—Renaud becomes obsessed with tracking her down. In Season 2, he joins forces with Marshal Kent, determined to capture her at all costs.
Episode 6 marks the climax of this hunt. After killing Marshal Kent, Renaud sets a trap, anticipating that Teonna will return to the site of Pete Plenty Clouds’ death. His plan works—Teonna and her father, Runs His Horse, arrive, unaware that Renaud is watching. Runs His Horse mistakenly believes they are finally safe with Kent dead. However, Runs His Horse underestimates Renaud’s persistence and allows his guard to drop.
Seizing the opportunity, Renaud strikes. He kills Runs His Horse and corners Teonna, demanding that she repent for her so-called sins. But Teonna, having endured so much suffering, refuses to submit. When she realizes Renaud intends to kill her, she fights back, stabbing him multiple times. To ensure he’s truly dead, she finishes him off with a gunshot, ending his reign of terror for good.

Sebastian Roché’s Exit from 1923—What’s Next?
With Sebastian Renaud’s brutal death, it’s clear that Sebastian Roché will no longer be part of 1923. The series doesn’t rely much on flashbacks, and Renaud’s character has no deep personal ties to Teonna beyond being her oppressor. This makes it highly unlikely that he’ll return in visions or dreams.
Roché has spoken fondly about his experience working on 1923, especially alongside Aminah Nieves. He shared his appreciation for their dynamic, saying, “We may have been antagonists in this brilliant series, but [are] bffs in real life.” Despite his character’s exit, Roché has plenty of exciting projects ahead, signaling a new chapter in his acting career.
How Renaud’s Death Shapes Teonna’s Future
The elimination of Renaud and Marshal Kent significantly impacts Teonna’s storyline moving forward. With both major threats gone, she is no longer being actively hunted. However, the trauma she has endured will undoubtedly shape her next steps.
Her future remains uncertain. Without her father, Runs His Horse, and her love interest, Pete Plenty Clouds, Teonna must navigate a world that has been cruel to her. But with the influence of the church and law enforcement momentarily out of the picture, she can finally focus on survival rather than constant escape.
If 1923 gets renewed for another season, Teonna’s journey could shift toward rebuilding her life and finding her place in a world that tried to erase her identity. Taylor Sheridan’s decision to kill off Renaud may signal a turning point for her character, opening up new possibilities beyond the cycle of oppression and revenge.
For now, fans can be sure of one thing—Father Renaud’s time in 1923 is over. And with that, Teonna Rainwater can finally take control of her own destiny. Stay tuned for more updates on 1923 and its future, only on TV Acute!
