Even if it’s a work of fiction, there are some parallels to the actual world that can’t be ignored. The setting and historical period of the well-called and excellently written “Jubilee” are presented with verve and flavor through the variety of realistic fictional characters who are definitely based on real individuals of that era.
Jubilee draws inspiration from Bollywood’s past. Roy Talkies, run by producer Shrikant Roy and his wife Sumitra Kumari, India’s highest-grossing actress, is where the action kicks out. Roy wants a new leading man, and he thinks he’s found the one in the gifted actor Jamshed Khan (Nandish Singh Sandhu). Motwane told Variety that he was inspired to write about the Indian film business of the ’50s by high quality. The events depicted in Jubilee are mostly fabricated, yet the film is set in the real world and inspired by Bollywood’s first major scandal. Himanshu Rai and his wife Devika Rani, the reigning queen of Indian cinema at the time, ran the top film company in India, Bombay Talkies. Devika and her co-star Najm-ul-Hassan began dating on the set of their film Jeevan Naiya, but when they ran away together, production on the film was put on hold. Himanshu Rai confronted Sashadhar Mukherjee, a studio sound engineer and brother of Devika’s. After Devika negotiated a sizable financial agreement for it, Mukherjee was able to persuade the main pair to come back. Rai accepted Devika, but he fired his idol Najm-ul-Hassan and replaced him with Kumudlal Ganguly – who eventually took the name, Ashok Kumar. His two brothers, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar, also became actors, and Kishore went on to become one of India’s most celebrated musicians. Kumadlal a.k.a Ashok Kumar benefited from the change. After being let go from Bombay Talkies, Hassan had trouble finding work at other studios. Although this Jubilee occurs in 1947, the incident from which it is adopted occurred in 1936.
