That was a starting point, and then through conversations with Harriet, we were finding a way to tell a story about a young woman navigating the world and trying to get through the day with dignity—sometimes successfully, sometimes not. And that’s something that everyone can relate to. Harriet Warner said to Screen Rant I had read that novel a long time ago and loved it; I loved the movie. But as a feminist, I think it was gonna take some work. It was very much a story [told] through men, and I think for me, it was like, “How does this become a kind of feminist tale?” It was rereading the novel and finding the extraordinary Letter 81, which is from the Marquise de Merteuil. It really talks about her as a construct and a creation to navigate and survive in this world, and my interpretation of that was, “Wow, this woman doesn’t feel like she’s part of that world. It feels like she struggles with it and doesn’t share its values.”

Colin Callender said,”I began by asking, “What is it about Dangerous Liaisons that has made it continue to be part of the landscape of modern culture, even 300 years after the book was published? What is it about the book that endures, and what could we explore in television over time, with characters, that you couldn’t do with a single movie or a play?”
At the core of it, there are two things. One is that it’s a love story, albeit a fractured and tragic one. But it’s also the story of a woman trying to navigate a man’s world. That’s as relevant today as it was back in the latter part of the 18th century. and that was what I came to Harriet with.
