IS THE LIFE LIST A TRUE STORY? THE REAL INSPIRATION BEHIND NETFLIX’S FILM

Life often throws us curveballs when we least expect them and takes us down paths we never thought possible.  This is exactly what happens to Alex, the main character in The Life List, a new Netflix movie.  The movie, which stars Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen, and Connie Britton and was directed by Adam Brooks, is a touching story of finding yourself and getting a second chance.  The movie is based on the same-named book by Lori Nelson Spielman and looks at how revisiting childhood dreams can change a person’s fate.  But is this moving story based on real events, or is it all made up?  Let’s look more closely at the movie’s plot and where it came from.

THE STORY OF THE LIFE LIST

Alex is at the center of The Life List. She seems stuck in a life she never planned for.  She works in marketing at the cosmetics company her mother owns, and she and her long-term boyfriend Finn live a normal life.  Her world is turned upside down, though, when her mother Elizabeth dies.  Elizabeth doesn’t leave Alex a traditional inheritance after she dies. Instead, she gives her a challenge: she has to finish the goals she set for herself when she was 13.  She will lose her inheritance if she fails.
There are personal goals, childhood dreams, and romantic goals on the list.  You might think that reading Moby Dick is an easy task but it turns out to be more difficult than you thought.  Alex has to deal with the decisions she has made as an adult as she goes on this unexpected journey.  She meets Brad along the way. Brad is a lawyer who is taking care of her mother’s estate and slowly becomes an important person in her life.  At the same time, she starts to see her relationship with Finn in a different way.
The Life List _
There are funny and romantic parts in the movie that balance out its heavy emotional content.  Alex’s family and friends help her get things done and sometimes make her laugh when she’s having a hard time.  She rediscovers her love for teaching, gets back in touch with old friends, and finds a part of herself she thought she had lost for good.

IS THE LIFE LIST BASED ON A TRUE STORY?

In a traditional sense, The Life List is not based on a true story, even though it feels very personal and real.  The movie is based on Lori Nelson Spielman‘s 2013 book of the same name, which was based on a true story.  She got the idea for the story when she found a list of goals she had made when she was a teenager.  She thought about her old dreams and how her life might have been different if she had followed all of them.  This gave me the idea for the book’s main character to go on a similar journey of self-discovery.
The movie stays true to the main ideas of the book, but there are some big changes.  Some parts of the story and the names of the characters have been changed to make them more suitable for the movie version.  Alex’s journey to find herself through revisiting her childhood dreams, on the other hand, stays the same.

The book was also affected by Spielman’s time as a homebound teacher in an inner-city school district and her volunteer work at a shelter for the homeless.  These events gave the main character’s problems and goals more depth, which made her story feel even more real.  Romance, grief, and personal growth are all skillfully balanced in the book so that readers can relate to Alex’s emotional change.
At its heart, The Life List is about finding happiness again by being open to change.  It shows how important it is to think about yourself, grow as a person, and take risks.  The movie makes people think about their own goals and asks them to reflect on what really makes them happy.  We can learn from Alex’s story that it’s never too late to go after old dreams or start over.
Even though The Life List isn’t based on a true story, it was inspired by things that a lot of people have been through.  The movie is a reminder that life is a journey, and sometimes we have to look back before we can move forward. This is true whether we are dealing with loss, new challenges, or the search for happiness.
