Before the election, New Mexico was seen as a “likely Democratic” state, which reflected how it had voted in the past. Hillary Clinton, who was Secretary of State at the time, won the state by 8 points in 2016, and President Joe Biden made it 11 points in 2020.
Since 2019, Democrats have held all statewide offices in New Mexico, making them the majority in the state’s politics. The state legislature and governor’s mansion are both controlled by Democrats, which has helped keep the trend blue over the past few years.
Biden easily won New Mexico in the Democratic primary earlier this year, but a big chunk of voters chose “uncommitted,” mostly as a protest against how the administration was handling the conflict between Israel and Hamas. An extra 7% of the vote went to — Marianne Williamson, who was running against Biden.
New Mexico’s continued support for Harris shows the Democratic movement in the region as a whole. The state is a key battleground that is becoming more important.
