The horror film by Lee Daniels called THE DELIVERANCE will be a new thrilling story based on actual events. The movie is based on the story of a single mother Ebony Jackson (Andra Day) who is trying to find a job and may mend her relationship with her family. However, peace does not last and after they have moved into the new home, the evils start coming for the family and they are transformed into a nightmare. While trying to save her family from such evil influential forces, the movie encompasses elements of possession, faith as well as supernatural. THE DELIVERANCE is directed by Lee Daniels who was nominated for Academy Awards and the film stars such talented actors as Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mo’Nique and others.
It is, therefore, worth pointing out that the events depicted in THE DELIVERENCE are based on the true story that happened in Gary, Indiana. These cases revolve around Latoya Ammons and her family’s encounter; the case is often referred to as the Gary Demon House.
WHO IS LATOYA AMMONS?
Latoya Ammons is a woman, whose story shocked not only the media but also paranormal investigators. Ammons, with her mother, Rosa Campbell, and three children moved into a house, 3860 Carolina Street, Gary Indiana in November 2011. Instead of the new journey, it became a living nightmare for the protagonist very soon. In the family, initially they started receiving weird and nightmare like experiences, which they could not account for.
In less than a year of occupying the house, the family identified black flies flying around the porch during December after they have attempted to kill them. On the inside of the house, such incidents heightened: Rosa Campbell said that she witnessed sounds of footsteps in the basement, the doors were also making some noises. She even said she saw an unknown figure looming in the living room at night. In the Ammons family, the 12-year-old daughter reported that she was floating on her bed during her sleep-over and the behavior of the sons got worse day by day. One of the sons was said to have been picked up and slammed across the room by an unseen force while the other started growling making threats of violence with eyes rolled backward.
LATOYA AMMONS HAUNTING EXPLAINED: WHAT HAPPENED TO HER FAMILY?
Such experiences escalated: that is why the family decided to get help. On April 19, 2012, they called their doctor, Dr. Geoffrey Onyeukwu who observed that the family’s behaviour was strange, and he reported to the Police. When the police arrived, they noted that the children were displaying quite malicious behaviour. DCS intervened, fearing the children were trying to get attention from their mother. However, the incident at the case changed to the shocking when a DCS worker alleged that he saw Ammons’ youngest son ‘walking up the wall backwards’.
While some authorities remained skeptical, others felt that there must be something magical afoot. While the police captain Charles Austin, with 37 years of service, felt that the house was cursed. An alleged photograph from the Indianapolis star post the family’s exit showed a shadow like figure in the house. The family approached their priest Father Michael Maginot and he subjected both Ammons and her house to three exorcisms believing that they had possessed with evil spirits. These haunting incidences reached their climax in the year 2012, when the Ammons family relocated. Once they left the Gary home, the paranormal incidences ceased and they were able to live a normal life again.
WHERE IS LATOYA AMMONS NOW?
By the year 2014, Latoya Ammons, her mother and her children have relocated to Indianapolis and was not afraid of the haunting anymore which was in Gary. Ammons further said in the IndyStar interview that they were at a point where they had found closure as a family. However, they have been able to try and pick themselves up from the painful ordeal although she still has a nightmare of the experience in the “Demon House”. Latoya Ammons agreed on a movie deal in 2014 in partnership with Evergreen Media holdings and aiming for a movie with direction from Lee Daniels that portrays their experiences.
WHO IS THE OWNER OF THE GARY DEMON HOUSE NOW?
The house at 3860 Carolina Street in Gary, Indiana, became infamous as “The Demon House” after Latoya Ammons’ experience was brought to light. Zak Bagans, a paranormal investigator who hosts and executive produces the Travel Channel series Ghost Adventures, bought the house in 2014 after reading about Ammons’ story of being possessed by demons. Interested in the story, Bagans and his team made a two-hour documentary, DEMON HOUSE, which was released in March 2018. It narrated the extent of Bagans’ probe to the house and the horror that befell Ammons and her family.
However, after the shooting of the documentary, Bagans decided to destroy the house in January 2016 due to bad energy that was associated with the house. It is still one of the most popular films in the field of paranormal activity and some people consider it one of the, if not the most convincing documentaries that tell the existence of the supernatural, while others consider it a pseudo-documentary.
Latoya Ammons’ case is one of the most discussed recent ghost cases, and the story is still developed in different ways today. Whether in documentaries, books, or movies such as DELIVERANCE, the happenings in Gary’s “Demon House” are unforgettable.
