Charlotte “Lottie” Matthews, portrayed by Courtney Eaton (teen) and Simone Kessell (adult), is one of the most enigmatic characters in Showtime’s Yellowjackets. A privileged girl from a wealthy family, Lottie began having disturbing visions as early as age ten—visions her mother saw as precognition and her father dismissed as delusions. Sent to a psychiatrist and put on medication, Lottie’s life changed drastically when she joined her high school soccer team, the WHS Yellowjackets.
When Flight 2525 crashed deep in the wilderness en route to the nationals, Lottie transformed from a quiet, troubled teen into a spiritual figure. Strange things happened to her, and she seemed to be in touch with the spooky power of the forest. Over time, she led a group of people who saw her visions as holy guidance. She had morning rituals, sacrificed blood, and became crazy about Shauna’s unborn child, thinking the child was meant to do something amazing.
Lottie’s followers still looked to her after they were saved. As an adult, she opened a wellness center, but she kept losing touch with reality. It was her strange behavior and references to “the Wilderness” that split the survivors, and it was these splits that led to her tragic and mysterious death.
YELLOWJACKETS SEASON 3 EPISODE 9: IS MELISSA ALIVE OR DEAD?
WHO KILLED LOTTIE? THE MURDER OF LOTTIE IS FINALLY SOLVED IN SEASON 3 FINALE
After three long seasons of secrets, lies, and psychological torment, the murder of Charlotte “Lottie” Matthews is finally solved in the explosive Yellowjackets Season 3 finale titled “Full Circles.” The mystery that has haunted viewers—how did Lottie die, and who was responsible—finds its conclusion in one of the show’s most emotionally charged episodes.
At the center of it all is Callie Sadecki (Sarah Desjardins) daughter of Shauna Shipman (played by Melanie Lynskey). Throughout Season 3, Shauna’s grip on her family and reality weakens and her trauma from the wilderness years continues to rear its ugly head. At the same time, Lottie’s influence comes back when she steals a crucial DAT tape that Melissa sent to Shauna. This makes Callie decide to handle the situation herself.
The final confrontation takes place at Lottie’s secluded home. Fueled by anger, confusion, and a desire to understand the growing rift with her mother, Callie confronts Lottie about the tape. What begins as a tense encounter spirals into something more unsettling. Lottie, already deep in her spiritual paranoia, begins to tell Callie that she is the “child of the Wilderness.” Lottie’s words aren’t just unsettling—they’re dangerous. She genuinely believes that Callie is a reincarnation or a vessel of the mysterious force that she’s long worshiped.
Callie, however, is having none of it. She is neither a believer nor willing to tolerate Lottie’s delusions. All she wants is the truth about the tape and the reasons behind her mother’s coldness. But Lottie doesn’t stop. She crosses the line by comparing Callie to Shauna—claiming she’s just like her mother. In that moment, everything boils over. Already shaken and angry, Callie reacts instinctively.
She shoves Lottie. It’s not premeditated. It’s not planned. But the outcome is final. Lottie falls down the candle-lined staircase. The fall is fatal.
YELLOWJACKETS: HOW DID VAN DIE? HER TRAGIC DEATH EXPLAINED!
Misty (Christina Ricci), investigating the murder on her own through her citizen detective network, stumbles across a forum post revealing that a body matching Lottie’s description has been found. The body’s photo confirms her worst fears: Lottie is dead. Misty is then contacted by Walter, who ominously texts, “I just heard about Lottie, are you okay?”
At first, suspicion falls on Shauna when DNA evidence from under Lottie’s fingernails appears to match her. But a shocking revelation clears her: the DNA actually belongs to Callie. It’s this forensic twist that leads Misty straight to Callie. When confronted, Callie confesses to the killing but insists it was an accident—a moment of rage and fear mixed together.
What Yellowjackets does best is blur the line between mental illness and spiritual influence, and Lottie’s death is a prime example. Was she simply delusional? Or was there truly a force guiding her beliefs and actions? That remains open for interpretation. But what is clear now is who was responsible for her death: not Shauna, not Misty, but Callie Sadecki—a teenager forced to grow up too fast in the shadow of trauma.
With Lottie’s death, the Wilderness claims another life, though this time not through starvation, exposure, or sacrifice—but through the generational pain it left behind.
