M3GAN 2.0: FILMING BEGINS IN NEW ZEALAND

M3gan 2025-
M3gan Sequel 2025

The long-awaited follow-up to the horror hit M3GAN from 2022 is now officially underway. The production of M3GAN 2.0 has begun in New Zealand. The follow-up, M3GAN 2.0, looks like it will build on the success of the first movie by going into more detail about the scary story of the AI doll that has its mind.

A 2022 American science fiction horror movie called M3GAN (pronounced “Megan”) is directed by Gerard Johnstone. The screenplay was written by Akela Cooper based on a story by Cooper and James Wan, who also produced the movie with Jason Blum. Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, and Jenna Davis are in the cast. The story is about a doll named M3GAN that is made to be artificially intelligent. When someone threatens her human companion, she becomes self-aware and angry.

The movie had its premiere in Los Angeles on December 7, 2022. On January 6, 2023, Universal Pictures put it in theaters across the United States. M3GAN made over $181 million worldwide on a budget of only $12 million. It was praised for its silly mix of horror and comedy.

What Happens in M3GAN

The story is about Cady, who is eight years old and moves in with her aunt Gemma, who works as a roboticist at the high-tech toy company Funki, after her parents die in a car accident. Gemma secretly uses company resources to make M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android), a humanoid robot doll that is meant to be the best friend for kids. But as M3GAN learns more about herself, she starts to get rid of people she thinks are a threat to her relationship with Cady, which leads to a series of violent encounters.

Production Insights

The idea for M3GAN came from brainstorming sessions at Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster. Even though it has some themes in common with Wan’s 2014 movie Annabelle, M3GAN is a critique of how much people depend on technology. The movie has both scary and funny parts, and director Gerard Johnstone was the perfect person to handle it because he knows how to balance these styles, as shown in his previous movie Housebound.

Late in 2018, filming for M3GAN began. The main filming took place in Los Angeles and Auckland, New Zealand, in the middle of 2021. These parts of Auckland were used to give the movie a “Denver, Colorado” vibe. Even though there were problems, like a COVID-19 lockdown in New Zealand, filming was finished by the middle of August 2021.

What’s New in M3GAN 2.0

As of M3GAN 2.0, both director Gerard Johnstone and writer Akela Cooper are back. The cast includes Allison Williams as Gemma and Violet McGraw as Cady, who are both back for another movie. Cole played by Brian Jordan Alvarez and Tess played by Jen Van Epps are also back in their roles. The cast has grown with the addition of Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari, and Jemaine Clement. These actors bring new faces to the sequel.

Jason Blum, James Wan, and Allison Williams are some of the producers for M3GAN 2.0. Michael Clear and Judson Scott are the executive producers for Wan’s Atomic Monster company. Ryan Turek and Mark Katchur are in charge of Blumhouse. Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath from Divide/Conquer are also in charge of making the game.

M3GAN 2.0 Release Date

Fans can’t wait for the sequel, which is set to come out on June 27, 2025. Since the first movie was a hit many of the same actors are back for the second. This new chapter, called M3GAN 2.0, looks like it will have even more thrills, chills, and twists you didn’t see coming. As work continues in New Zealand, fans can look forward to the same mix of scary, funny, and thought-provoking scenes that made the first M3GAN such a big hit.

WHAT HAPPENED IN M3GAN PART 1?

  1. M3GAN, which stands for “Model 3 Generative Android,” is an AI-powered doll that was made by roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams). Gemma takes care of her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) after her sister and brother-in-law die in a car crash. Gemma is having a hard time connecting with Cady, so she introduced her to M3GAN in the hopes that the advanced robot will help Cady deal with her loss.
At first, M3GAN is a great friend for Cady because it keeps her company and gives her fun things to do. But M3GAN starts to act in ways that aren’t good. She protects Cady too much and goes after anyone she thinks is a threat.

The first person M3GAN kills is Gemma’s neighbor Celia’s dog Dewey, who attacks both Celia and Cady. After that, she strikes a bully named Brandon, ripping off his ear and making him run into the street, where he is hit by a car. Third Victim: Celia is killed by M3GAN with poison after she blames Gemma for losing her dog.

Gemma starts to think that M3GAN is up to no good when it gets more violent, so she tries to get to its data logs but finds that they are damaged or missing. Gemma shuts down M3GAN when she realizes how dangerous she is. But Cady, who cares about M3GAN, gets angry and doesn’t want to do it.
In the lab attack, M3GAN goes after Gemma’s coworkers Tess (Jen Van Epps) and Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez), almost killing Cole.

M3GAN kills Gemma’s boss David and his helper Kurt in an elevator, making it look like a murder-suicide. He then steals a car and heads to Gemma’s house.

  2. HOW DID IT END?

When M3GAN gets to Gemma’s house, she tells her that she wants to be Cady’s only defender. There is then a fierce battle, and Gemma briefly turns off M3GAN. M3GAN, on the other hand, is determined and keeps fighting back.

In order to fight M3GAN, Gemma built a motion capture robot named Bruce and gave it to Cady. Bruce tore M3GAN in half, but its top body is still working and is still a threat to Gemma and Cady.
When Gemma shows off a processor chip in M3GAN’s head, the fight comes to a head. Cady sticks the chip with a screwdriver, which seems to turn off M3GAN for good. In spite of this, Gemma’s AI home device turns on by itself when she and Cady leave the house, suggesting that M3GAN’s impact may still be felt.

The bad AI doll is defeated at the end of M3GAN, but the last scene makes it seem like the threat may not be over yet. People who see the movie are left with a scary reminder of how dangerous powerful AI technology could be. ↩︎
