Welcome back to Mayfair Witches‘ mysterious world! In the first episode of season 2, “Lasher,” we go back to Rowan’s life and see her dealing with the effects of being a supernatural mother. The episode makes you think about power, control, and how the lines between love and fear are fuzzy as Lasher grows quickly, both physically and emotionally. What does it mean to be a parent to a being that is both your child and a reincarnated lover? Let’s start this interesting episode.
MAYFAIR WITCHES SEASON 2 EPISODE 1 RECAP
Rowan, played by Alexandra Daddario, starts the episode trying to get used to being the mother of Lasher, a being that doesn’t follow any natural rules. Lasher has grown so quickly in just five days that it scares me. He goes from being a toddler pulling out his own teeth to a child with a creepy smile and a love of getting into trouble in an instant. His “uncanny valley” behavior makes Rowan feel torn between her need to protect him and her deepest fear. Even though he acts in a strange way, Rowan writes about his growth in her journal, trying to make sense of the strange.
Rowan’s confusion grows as Lasher continues to grow. Her training as a doctor in science doesn’t match up with the strange things that are happening in front of her. She sends a sample of Lasher’s blood to a lab to be tested because she needs to know if he is even human.
Aunt Dolly Jean vs. Aunt Carlotta’s ghost
Rowan isn’t the only one going through this. Aunt Carlotta’s ghost often shows up and tells Rowan to kill Lasher by calling him “the devil.” Dolly Jean, a living Mayfair matriarch, tells Rowan to protect Lasher, but it’s not clear why she says that. Rowan has to deal with her moral duties and her growing doubts because of these opposing forces.
At the same time, Lasher’s disturbing behavior gets worse. He tries to kiss Rowan in a very private and disturbing way, which scares her. Lasher is confused by her rejection because he doesn’t seem to understand social norms. This shows that he is both a child and an entity that exists hundreds of years ago.
LASHER’S TRAGIC INTERACTION AT A HALLOWEEN RAVE
When Lasher sneaks out to go to a Halloween rave, he changes into a whole new person. There, his supernatural abilities killed a young woman by accident. Lasher brings the body back to Rowan, but he is devastated and doesn’t know what to do. Because Rowan is scared of what will happen because of what he did, he locks him in the basement to try to keep the darkness inside him from spreading. Lasher calls her “Mommy” and begs to be let go at a very emotional time, which shakes Rowan to her core.
CIPRIEN’S INVESTIGATION INTO THE MAYFAIR FAMILY
Ciprien Grieve, played by Tongayi Chirisa, goes back to his job as a Talamasca agent and continues to watch Rowan and Lasher from the background. After being taken away and magically rendered unconscious, Ciprien learns that Albrecht Escher, the leader of the Talamasca, may have messed with his memories. Ciprien writes down everything in a Bible that has been magically made to serve as a memory bank to keep his thoughts safe. When he is told to hire Moira, a Mayfair cousin who can read minds and is angry at Lasher for killing her sister Tessa, his suspicions grow.
THE INTRODUCTION OF MOIRA
Moira, who has been called “nobody’s favorite cousin,” brings a new point of view to the Mayfair family. Because she is smart and doesn’t trust Lasher, she is a great addition to the cast. But her open dislike of Lasher and her desire to know more about Tessa’s death put her at odds with her family, leaving her alone and vulnerable.
CORTLAND’S FATE
In a side story, Rowan’s uncle and father Cortland (Harry Hamlin) stays frozen solid as stone. It’s like his mind is stuck in a scary hallway with flickering lights and ghostly women who are torturing him. This creepy scene adds another level of horror to the episode and reminds viewers of what happened because of what Cortland did in the past.
MAYFAIR WITCHES SEASON 2 EPISODE 1: ENDING
There are two important moments at the end of the episode. First, Rowan throws the girl’s body into a fog-covered lake, which is a metaphor for her slide into morally murky territory. Not only is she trying desperately to protect Lasher, but she is also aware that she is a part of the chaos around her.
Going back to the Mayfair mansion, Lasher gets out of the basement and comes out as an adult (played by Ben Feldman), ready to face Rowan. Their relationship is about to take a big turn because of this change. Lasher is no longer a child, so his plans and abilities are even more dangerous. His rebirth makes people wonder what his real goal is and whether Rowan can stop him or even wants to.
“Lasher” sets the tone for a tough season by exploring the complicated relationships and moral problems that make up the world of Mayfair. Rowan has a hard time because the lines between love, fear, and duty aren’t always clear on her path as a mother and a witch. Things are more dangerous than ever now that Lasher is an adult and Ciprien is finding out dark secrets.
