Is Mothers’ Instinct (2024) Based on a True Story?

Mother’s Instinct is a 2024 American psychological thriller film directed by Benoît Delhomme, and starring Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Josh Charles. It is a drama showing Alice (Chastain) and Céline (Hathaway) as two women in their 30s, who have families with kids, living in the 1960s in suburbia.

MOTHERS’ INSTINCT STORY

Alice and Céline are neighbors and are friends; both the women are mothers of boys of the same age. Jealousy between Alice and her husband surfaces during a surprise party that Alice organizes for Céline. The next day Celine’s son Max is unable to go to school due to flu and stays at home. Again, Alice observes Max struggling to fit a birdhouse onto a balcony. Failing to find him in this shorter passage, she runs around the house bare-footed and gets there too late to save Max from falling off the balcony.

After the death of Max (Baylen D. Bielitz), Céline becomes emotionally detached from Alice but starts to bond with Alice’s son, Theo. Even when Theo becomes very ill in Céline’s house because of a bad allergy and is admitted in hospital, Alice finds something fishy about it. Her suspicions increase more especially when Céline’s husband dies under mysterious circumstances. The plot gradually progresses through some intense encounters to the climax that sees Céline kill Alice and her family before adopting Theo (Eamon O’Connell). This web of lying and controlling opens a question of genuine intentions of the people in front of the viewers.

IS MOTHERS’ INSTINCT BASED ON A TRUE STORY?

As much as the show may sound like it has been inspired by true events, “Mothers’ Instinct” is not. It was inspired by the French movie Duelles of the same name, directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse in 2018, although it has its roots in the novel by Barbara Abel, ‘Derrière la haine’ in the English version ‘Behind the Hatred’ published in 2012. This is a fictional story by a Belgian author felt Abel who has specialized in the thriller genre of writing.

However, it is also important to note that such a film may well feature some differences when compared with the novel. It could also be said that the time setting has shifted from modern Paris to 1960’s suburbia. Some of the characters and some storyline have also been changed as the name of the characters are not the same as in the book. Actually, one of the characters of the novel has the same name as the girl in the story – they are called Laetitia and Tiphaine respectively But, actually, the story of Max’s death is not entirely the same, but the plot is truly the same.

At first, Olivier Masset-Depasse was supposed to direct the English language version of this film, but he backed out of the project only a day before shooting started. This paved the way for Benoît Delhomme to come on board and take the director chair.

Director Benoît Delhomme uses scenes motivated by classic suspense films paying more attention to internal conflicts of the characters. One has to stress that the characters’ fears and problems are interwoven with social concerns and mirror the atmosphere of the 1960s.

Mothers’ Instinct owes much of its flavour to Hitchcockian cinema, which concerns itself with both pure psychological suspense and paranoia. Delhomme intended to create the same level of horror and suspense that characterize Hitchcock’s movies. In striving for the complex dynamic between the two mothers, Delhomme constructs a plot that never lets the audience become entirely sure of the truth of the characters’ stories.

“Mothers’ Instinct” is a highly engaging psychologic thriller because it explores the work of fiction and not real-life occurrences. The move from the novel to the film still keeps all the aspects of suspense and drama, and the director Delhomme adds his take on it ,Moreover, the cast choice also contributes to the film’s feel.
