In “Heartless,” the eighth episode of NCIS‘s 21st season, the team will look into the kidnapping and death of a famous heart surgeon. The 1000th show was full of Easter eggs and memories, but “Heartless” is just going to be a normal case-of-the-week episode. There is a hint, though, that Alden Parker will go underground in the medical field, which could be funny.
Gary Cole‘s character hasn’t had a lot of screen time this season, even though he’s like a father figure to the field agents. This episode might be the chance for that to happen. Because there are only ten episodes, personal stories may not get as much attention, but the big ending with a cliffhanger is still planned.

NCIS The 1000th Recap
The touching scene that begins the episode—Director Leon Vance visiting the grave of his late wife—sets the emotional tone for what’s to come. Their most recent case takes them back to “Yankee White,” the pilot episode, where Gibbs and his team looked into a death on Air Force One that no one could explain. This flashback to the past not only connects the current case to the show’s beginnings, but it also shows how far the characters have come.
Vance being shot by a long-range sniper is one of the most shocking parts of the show. It makes fans think of Caitlin Todd’s sad death in Season 2. Not only does this event put the FBI on high watch, but it also brings back former agent Tobias Fornell because the same person is after him.
The show also talks about the bombing of Tom Morrow’s family crypt when he was NCIS director, which makes the case even more complicated. As the investigation goes on, the team finds a link to what happened in “Yankee White” and a terrifying plan for payback that goes back twenty years.
Even though the case is serious, the show has some funny parts when it honors the main cast and the franchise’s spinoffs. Characters from NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawai’i make cameos that tell viewers of the bigger world the show has built up over the years.
At the end, Vance makes it through his experience and has a touching moment with his son that shows how important their job at NCIS is. This scene and a montage of past events from the series make for a touching reminder of how important the show was and how it left a legacy.
