Outlander Season 7 Episode 1 Recap

Outlander’s seventh season begins with the episode “A Life Well Lost,” in which Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe)  is detained and charged with killing Malva Christie. A vision of Claire being executed for her purported crimes is Jamie’s worst dream come true. Jamie is aware that Claire is still alive, thus it turns out to be only a vision.

Claire is imprisoned and gets to know her cell mates while Jamie and Young Ian attempt to rescue her. When Claire finds out that the courts are closed because of the coming revolution, she understands that she cannot stay in jail forever. Claire is fortunately momentarily liberated when troops searching for a healer arrive at the cell. She is transferred to a ship, where she meets the local governor, who asks her to assist his wife who is expecting.

The Governor learns about Claire’s allegations and the Frasers’ rejection of the Crown. These elements are brought up by Major MacDonald, a friend of Claire and Jamie, and the Governor considers killing Claire. When Jamie goes to the jailhouse to free her, he finds that the guards have already taken Claire to the governor’s ship.

As Jamie readies himself for duty in the Continental Army, he may come face to face with his British comrade Lord John Grey (David Berry). Lord John is currently caring for Jamie’s illegitimate son William (Charles Vandervaart), who happens to be a Redcoat. Jamie attempts to convince the Governor to agree to Claire’s release, but their divergent views on the Crown present a problem. Tom Christie, who has been keeping an eye on Claire’s well-being, offers to assist Jamie.

Tom admits to killing Malva and justifies it by saying she was a witch who would do bad things. He declares his love for Claire and accepts responsibility voluntarily, confessing to the Governor and leaving a note in the press. Although Claire questions Tom’s account, she is powerless to influence the situation.

Jamie consoles Claire as they talk about Tom’s confession back at the Wilmington Inn. Jamie confronts Richard Brown, the person in charge of Claire’s arrest, while Claire is sleeping. Jamie threatens Brown as the episode comes to a finish, leaving his future undetermined.

The Mackenzies are following their own plot, with Roger continuing on his route toward becoming a priest. He meets Wendigo Donner, another time traveler who once watched as Claire was abused. Bree and Roger’s friendship is strained as a result of Roger’s probable assistance to Wendigo. The episode ends on a cliffhanger regarding Richard Brown’s future, leaving viewers curious to see what transpires in the upcoming episode.
