Riverdale Season 5 Episode 18 Recap
Betty is at the Whyte Wyrm with her pals, talking about how the family is managing Polly’s death. Alice has fortified herself by listening to a cast album from Next To Normal (which she, Polly, and Betty saw on Mother’s Day). Betty retells the plot of Next To Normal while recalling their journey to see the show. Betty then spends the rest of the hour singing to her mother, attempting to break her out of her fantasy world in which she makes meatloaf, Charles plays football, and Polly is flawless. “Is your intention to just never leave the house ever again,” Betty asks her mother, upset.
However, Alice agrees to visit a Broadway musical when Betty suggests it. At least until she realizes she can’t abandon Polly. Alice tells Betty that she has been away from her for seven years, only to return and chase Polly away. Alice then informs Betty that Polly is no longer alive as a result of her. Betty walks out the door and sprints up to Kevin for a quick pep talk that turns into a pep… sing? She then gets rid of her mother’s record player, vows to never abandon her, and the two of them give Polly a memorial service, during which Jug is the only one who isn’t singing? Frank is even singing! Veronica doesn’t want to waste any time after finally getting her divorce and being with Archie, so she recommends they move in together. Archie wants to live with Frank and Jughead, which implies Veronica will be living with them as well.
Reggie begins to tell Veronica about his stockbroker plans, and she understands that she and Archie have quite different life goals. So, just as fast as they reunited, they decide to separate for a while. Meanwhile, Jughead and Tabitha have become a couple! Tabitha asks Jughead to dinner because her parents are in town for Mother’s Day. She really simply wants a buffer, so she introduces Jughead to her parents as her “lover.” Tabitha accepts Jug’s proposal that he may be her boyfriend for real. Jug still comes up for dinner and takes Tabitha off her feet with a rose he stole from a restaurant vase. While we’re on the subject of romance, there’s one more couple we should mention: Toni seeks to locate Britta in a foster home after she is discovered sleeping in a closet at school. Toni follows Fangs’ counsel when he suggests Cheryl. Toni returns home and tells Fangs she feels she loves him, while Cheryl looks after Britta for the time being. He shares my sentiments. They’re a full-fledged relationship by the end of the episode.
