Scenes From a Marriage (2021) Episode 1 Recap

We see Mira (Jessica Chastain) and Jonathan (Oscar Isaac) as they explore their marriage with a therapist. Jonathan tells the story of how they met in Colombia many years ago. In a flashback, we see him and Mira as roommates before eventually falling in love. The two drew toward one another as Jonathan moved away from his Jewish heritage and Mira moved away from her dark past of disastrous relationships. The married pair is stiff and awkward, and there is little chemistry between them. When the therapist asks Mira and Jonathan if they feel their marriage is a success after ten years together, neither of them can give a satisfactory answer. The therapist then discusses their relationship’s monogamy.

Mira and Jonathan are friends with another couple, Kate and Peter, though it’s difficult to determine if their relative lack of stability is meant to make the other two appear happy or duller. Mira doesn’t drink the toast when they all have dinner and get drunk together, and we find out why later she’s pregnant, and Jonathan fakes excitement over the news.  Mira isn’t quite as excited, but they eventually agree, if only because they both believe that’s exactly what a couple pretending to be blissfully married would do. Mira is plainly disturbed by Jonathan’s presence at the hospital, and she bursts into tears when he leaves the room. As a result, it’s clear that the pair feels stuck in their marriage.
