SEAL Team Season 7 Episode 4 Recap: “Heroes and Criminals”

In SEAL TEAM SEASON 7, EPISODE 4, named “Heroes and Criminals,” Bravo Team encounters the most challenging operation of their career. The episode continues with the introduction of Jason Hayes’s (David Boreanaz) team that consists of Sonny Quinn (AJ Buckley), Omar Hamza (Raffi Barsoumian), Brock Reynolds (Justin Melnick), Drew Franklin (Beau Knapp), and Trent Sawyer (Tyler Grey); they are still based in Asia. Assigned to bring down the Sai Lou criminal syndicate they are set for an operation in Myanmar in which the teams objective is to gather information on a fentanyl precursor factory. The objective is to link the Chinese syndicate, Sai Lou, to Beijing and mess up their activities. However, there are some factors that make the above mission not to be very straightforward.

The team explain that they’ll blow up the factory and Jason responds saying that they cannot afford many deaths. Despite the fact that the SEALs have thought through a good plan, Jason furiously shuts it down and underlines that they should not kill every worker in the factory. This makes his teammates notice his irrational behavior and they cant help but become worried about him as he becomes more and more erratic.

Jason has a better strategy — to rob the car that was transporting the factory workers’ salary. The idea is that if the employees do not receive their wages they will not come to work and Bravo can blow up the factory fearlessly. It again requires a fair amount of risk-taking and the team goes by whatever Jason had to say. However, just as Bravo is about to execute their plan, the situation takes an unexpected turn: Forcing the workers at gunpoint to go to work is exemplified by Sai Lou. Once again the mission of the company is close to be a failure.

But Bravo Team is ready for it and knows how to act. In a dramatic scene, the SEALs manage to delay the workers by creating a distraction: they ensure that money falls in the workers’ theatre creating havoc and purchasing time for them. The factory workers also get to the money that Bravo has laid for himself and, due to the confusion, Bravo manages to plant explosives around the factory. At last, the team manages to explode the factory and gets out of it, saving the people while at the same time, completing their goal of crippling Sai Lou’s factory.

Still, Bravo Team has achieved its goal, but the signs of friction between the team members are showing more clearly. Throughout the prep work of the mission, Jason becomes rather unsettling to the other members of the squad. Teres Majela said that talked through the helmet, John Lee is suffering clearly from the Traumatic Brain Injury which the character had brought from previous missions. Jason’s leadership has been instrumental in Bravo and now his inability to deal with his mental and physical health is now negatively impacting the team. During episode 4, specific behaviors which are quite odd for Jason are seen to include closing down the initial plan and being very overly protective. Drew thinks that Jason is shielding his teammates — but he also believes that his friend is terrified of what may occur when he is under pressure.

Ray Perry (Neil Brown Jr. ), who is Jason’s best friend, also realizes this about him at some point. The scene where Ray meets Jason for the first time is in a local dive after the mission. As Jason starts making some rather strange decisions during the op, it’s up to Ray to ask questions. He quickly waves it away explaining that he is simply trying to guard his team from the consequences of answering those hard questions. But this is actually a distraction on Ray’s part and she does not fall for it. He begins to think that some of the actions he is witnessing are defensive in nature and carried out for Jason’s own benefit rather than for the benefit of his team and his struggle of the inner demons arising from a serious accident. This tension creates further future plot battles as Jason’s psychological state emerges as the key theme in the remaining episodes.

At the same time, another subplot of Drew Franklin’s character also exists. Sonny and Omar continue to have their doubts about Drew and they urge him to tell them his story. They even attempt to recruit him into Bravo through their initiations on new members that is in the team but Jason interrupts and stops them. With regard to the subplot, there is a tension involved with the new mysterious man apart from the fact that Jason helping Drew implies that the latter knows more than what he is willing to say about Drew.

On the same note Ray is no exception as he battles within him. In the last scene Ray tries to make Drew open up and tell him something about his life by admitting personal information himself. In the process, one learns several strong character traits of Ray as he confesses that the closer he comes to retirement, it becomes increasingly difficult to detach himself from SEAL team. Bravo has become his brother and that has made it hard for him to consider the option of retirement. The episode 4 however slightly depicts that despite this determination, it is not easy for Ray to retire and leave his fellow colleagues.

During SEAL TEAM SEASON 7, the personal conflicts in Bravo Team will be revealed more and more. Jason’s degradation and Ray’s indecision on retirement are the developments heading towards some melodramatic climaxes and Drew with his dark past is still uncertain for his future. As the stakes are increased to a new level, Bravo’s fate hangs in the balance and the subsequent episodes promise to be even more intense.
