Shōgun Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
The episode is mostly about how Lady Mariko and English ship pilot John Blackthorne are starting to like each other. Even though they have problems and disagreements at first, like Blackthorne’s rude behavior and Mariko’s job as Fuji (Blackthorne’s consort), they start to feel closer.
As a Hatamoto living under Toranaga’s rule, Blackthorne finds it hard to get used to his new place in Japanese society. Living in a Japanese house, taking Fuji as his wife, and training Yabushige’s army are all hard things for him to do. Even with these problems, Blackthorne’s love of cannons gets him respect and admiration.
Yabushige is under more and more scrutiny and pressure, especially since Toranaga is pulling away and going back to Edo. He is in danger because he acts erratically and can’t keep his feelings in check. His alliance with Toranaga is also in doubt.
Omi, Yabushige’s nephew, comes up with a plan to use the gun squad to remove Toranaga from office and side with Ishido. This could tip the scales of power in their favor.
At the end of the episode, there is a dramatic cannon display that shows how destructive English cannons could be. But Nagakado’s hasty actions cause a fight that turns deadly, killing many people in a way that shocks Mariko and others.
