The first episode picks up six months after the events of season 2 come to a close. It’s been six months. Wilford has been pursuing Layton’s pirate train for about a month. Javi steers the train in silence. On Snowpiercer, everyone is bundled up. Dr. Pelton and Ms. Gillies, a teacher, are part of a rebellion to Wilford’s reign. Winnie sends Pelton a note. She dashes through the Night Car, where Oz is playing the piano and LJ is tending to the bar. Winnie informs Pike, who then informs Ruth, that signs of Snowpiercer have been spotted. They have no idea if Melanie is on board the pirate train. Pike wonders if Layton will ever return. Ben transports a sled of equipment to a location and informs Layton that he will begin collecting ice samples.
Josie and Layton keep an eye on the data, while Till and Alex lament their quest’s futility. Alex notifies Ben of a thermal switch failure. He insists that the train will be able to handle it. Till goes to the library to check on Miss Audrey, who is imprisoned in a cell. The ration packs for the three of them, as well as Martin Colvin, are brought in by Sykes. A weather front begins to approach. Ben starts walking back to the train station. He falls into a cavern, a room with chairs and computers, after noticing the ice covering splitting beneath his snowshoes. His signal has been lost, and he has been knocked out. The four of them in the library talk about what will happen when the trains are reunited. Till is told to shut everyone down and return to the engine by Layton, who calls down. The train’s resources are distributed by the resistance. Kevin consults Oz and LJ to learn more about the opposition and who might be the ringleader. Wilford takes a look at Javi’s scars. Ruth’s refuge is discovered by Kevin’s group. Pike and Ruth make haste to flee. Pike leads her to a cubby space in one of the unheated First Class cars, which is set up with a heater and only has a temperature of -12 degrees. To save Knox, Layton and Josie anchor themselves. Audrey and Martin plot a revolt and attempt to get Sykes to join them. They imprison her because she refuses to comply. Layton converses in order to keep Ben awake. Till tells Alex to talk about the engine problem on the train. Audrey strikes first, knocking Till unconscious. Audrey celebrates by lighting a cigarette. Till regains consciousness, but is unable to enter the engine due to Martin’s grip on the trap door. Ben is being lifted out of the hole by Josie and Layton. Josie is sent to the train with Ben by Layton. Layton investigates the area and discovers evidence of life as well as a generator. Someone in an enviro suit attacks him out of nowhere. He runs out of oxygen as a result of the conflict. He begins to suffocate. Audrey tries to sway Alex and persuade her to return to Wilford with the pirate train.
Till escapes via a different route, knocking Martin unconscious. Audrey and she disagree about what to do. Till knocks Audrey out while she tries to control the train. Layton has vivid visions of a sun-drenched world. He comes to. Josie tries unsuccessfully to summon Snowpiercer and Layton. The train arrives. Josie persuades Ben to join the team. She wishes to return to Layton. They see him coming back with someone on his back. Javi is the conductor of the main train. LJ and Oz are happy with their jobs. Kevin punishes the caught resistance members by having other passengers hurl garbage buckets at them. Dr. Headwood injects Zarah’s embryo while Zarah is comatose, and Wilfred dines in the laboratory car. Ruth is huddled in her nook. On the pirate train, Layton keeps an eye on his assailant, a woman who is unconscious. He is still having flashes of the sun-drenched vision he had.
