Alex reads her mother Melanie’s notebook. Melanie appears to her as she reads, speaking to her. Ben discovers in the engine room that Wilford’s Big Alice cars have blocked their track. Alex informs Layton and Ben that the cars are trapped in the track and require an engineer’s assistance to move. Ben and Alex exit the Snowpiercer and get into their cars, telling Javi to reverse until they clear the track. Asha is still haunted by her past. Ruth meets Pike. Ben and Alex enter Big Alice. The former displays a panel of Wilford’s sacrificial victims for the benefit of the chosen. Alex discovers Shilo’s dead body and recalls her childhood memories with Melanie, who continues to exist in her visions. Pike invites Ruth to his apartment after a wonderful date.
Javi sees Wilford’s dog barking at him. Wilford has thoughts of Melanie as he counts his days in prison. Wilford is still alive but in danger. Roche emerges from the drawers determined to avenge his family’s demise. He dupes Bess into stealing medicine to murder the powerful engineer. He disarms the guard to enter the prison. As Wilford marvels at Roche, the latter injects the medication inside him. Layton, who comes to the prison to ask Wilford about the Big Alice automobiles, discovers him dying. Layton saves Wilford by securing timely medical care. Even though Layton has no sympathy for Wilford, killing or abandoning him is the last thing Layton wants to do. Layton’s idealism does not wish for the despotic engineer’s demise. Layton also knows that Wilford’s understanding of the Snowpiercer as an engineer may be necessary for a crisis. Wilford is saved. Wilford is still alive, although in critical condition. If Mrs. Headwood’s medical efficiency fails to keep the engineer alive, the distance between death and Wilford may shrink.
Dr. Pelton is waiting for Layton nearby. She tells him about Zarah’s pregnancy and Dr. Headwood’s role in it. When Layton discovers the secret prenatal experiment, he confronts Zarah. The baby’s mother says she agreed to the experiment for the baby’s sake. Alex tells Layton and others that if Ben can’t open the automobiles, only Wilford can. When Layton gets to Wilford’s prison, he sees him dying. Then he begs Ben to return to the Snowpiercer. But Alex ignores Layton’s commands and works to find a solution.
